On October 2, I will be replacing everything under the plenum. At the same time I want to re-seal the valve covers.

I want to know whether the 91Q has a seal for the valve cover or whether it uses the Nissan RTV type sealant. Also, I seem to remember reading that some years use both. Can someone guide me here?

RTV 90-93. plus 4 new half moon rubber rear seals.94 and later use valve cover gasket plus dabs of RTV at appropriate places to hold gasket in place for assembly.

This will be a pretty big job for you... but it you're willing to tackle the plenum then the rocker covers won't be much more I guess. One trick that I learned watching Byron reseal my covers, is that he cleaned the mating surfaces on the covers and heads with an angle dye grinder.

He used some sort of pad attachment that resembles a very coarse "scrubby" pad that you might use for dishes.

If you have compressed air available, it's well worth it to get the surfaces in as-new condition before the re-seal vs. the method I used in the past (putty knife, dental pick, and give up after three hours).

A trick I tried on my last reseal was to put the RTV on the cam cover relatively thickly, then lightly seat the cover in place and insert the bolts a few turns. Let the RTV set up for about 10 minutes, then torque all the bolts properly. My theory is that this will result in a thicker and longer lasting layer of RTV where it counts.

I'm reviving this thread...

Infiniti says I can use any type of RTV, but is there a specific brand or color I should use for a valve cover reseal?

Doesn't matter *too* much--anything other than blue will be fine. Permatex makes a red that is probably very similar to factory red. I'd use that.

Permatex Ultra Grey is used by my local dealership... seems to work about as well as anything, and it blends in nicely with the engine too.
