My dealer says that some of their techs have been able to pull this swap off w/o removing the transmission. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Obviously mine is bad and needs replacing. Thanks.

The real prob. is if the hole is off; getting the sensor into the hole, then the retainer clip bolt is a pain (working through a 2" hole). Measure very carefully. None shall be the wiser. You could tack a plate over it if you MIG, disconn. the battery first.

Think positive, as it is a great oppurtunity [to use the normal method] to replace the rear main seal and examine the flywheel and starter gear teeth. To replace the exhaust rubber hangers and stress relieve the drive shaft u joints and change the transmission mount all for approximately the same labor.Where else can you persuade a tech to do all this for an extra $50-$100 in cash [as long as he finds the extra parts in your trunk].

But to get back to Stephen's question - yes it can be done. They did it on "Q1" at the same time as the oil pan and motor mounts were replaced. Essentially dropping the engine slightly if I understand the process correctly. Funny that Tech mentioned the parts in the trunk process... My car was in for a new oil pan (road hazard) and magically got new motor mounts, turbine sensor, etc that I supplied from Joe.

What sort of quote did they give you for the "alternate" method?

Well, I never got a quote on transmission R & R because I would never consider paying anyone to work on one of my cars. Except for stuff like alignments, wheel balancing, diagnostics, etc. I do everything else myself. I'm not trying to avoid a $500-600(I would imagine) bill, I'm trying to save about 6 or 7 hours of my time. Besides, these trannies are easy compared to a Subaru 4eat, which I have done several times. I don't have money to pay someone, nor do I have it for the extra parts Dennis mentioned. I thought about the hole idea and the tilt idea. I think I'll give the tilt a try before I start cutting. Heck, I don't even have the $125 or so for the dang sensor. Thanks for the replies.

Last time I had anything in to a dealer was for a Consult scan, after that was for an alignment. I tried to tilt it (Q trans) at first, and couldn't get to it, (but I put in my new trans mount then). Really don't know how in the hades anyone could get up & around to get in there and I have the patience of Job when it comes to inanimate objects. I once spent 4 hours getting an exhaust bolt back in my '82 Olds 98 (could have been a real wrench thrower). When its better to a shortcut just do it, as long as it retains original function and appearance.
