91 sentra transmission swap

I have a 1991 sentra se with a 5 speed manual, the case on the transmission is junk and i have seen more 4 speed manuals available for this car and wonder if i can just put a 4 speed manual in and bolt it up and be done with it. the engine is a 1.6 and it has the speedo cable not a speed sensor. another possiblilty is a 5 speed from a newer model but i dont know if the speed sensor can be switched out with cable drive from my old unit. can anyone help me out here? thanks
