'91 Sentra Transmission Cooler Hose?

My son's '91 Sentra has a split (leaking) hose which is attached to the bottom of his radiator. His transmission is not working. Is this some kind of transmission hose and would a leak cause the transmission to not work?

Yes, that is a transmission cooler hose. If the transmission is not getting cooled properly it is possible that it won't function right. But I would need more input on what kind of problems you are having with the transmission.

I think I should have the hose replaced first, then see if there is still a problem. Is this a special order item or can I adapt an existing hose?

Should be able to pick one up at the local parts store. Just get the right size.

Since I can't move the vehicle I would like to attempt this repair on my own. Does this repair involve removing anything (like one of the fans) or can I access both ends of the hose?

You might have to remove the splash guard from underneath the core support. But it should be all gravy from there.
