Ello,

I'm seriously thinking of getting a '91 R32 GTR (I'm in BC) and am wondering what the "safest" safety equipment 3ould be. I've heard the doors aren't reinforced so getting t-boned is a terrible idea. Would putting '92 doors on it be a good idea? Or maybe a roll cage? Also, since it doesn't have airbags, would 5-point harnesses be a good idea or are oem seat belts a better idea for street driving?

Thanks =D

You'd be better off asking some of those questions on GTR Canada, as some rules and regulations may differ from that of the U.S.

We have no rules in Canada for safety regulations for RHD that are 15yrs+ and older (other then some form of seatbelt). Thanks for the tip though :)

The doors are fine.
If you put a cage in it be sure to pad it.
The stock belts are fine. The thing people forget about racing harnesses is they don't unreel at all. Stock belts unreel somewhat to slow you down in a controlled fashion. Racing belts don't and in a serious front-ender you could snap your neck. Racers wear neck supports. Most people don't rock the neck donut on that drive to the store.

As far as safety is concerned, its not going to be much different than any late 80's or early 90's car.

No airbags, side impact is ok. Had a friend walk away from a very hard side impact on the drivers side. Seat belts are fine.

I have crashed GT-R's, and I am fine.

Honestly if its the thing you are worried about then perhaps a new Kia or Hyundai might be more your style.

HAHAHAHA!!! Snap!!!

Honestly, though. I echo everyone else's statement. If you're just looking for a GT-R for some sporty driving now and then and maybe an occasional drag strip run, you're fine with the stock safety equipment.

If you're planning on making a full on track slut, then ya, you might want to look into a cage, racing harnesses and the like.

I think its more dangerous to have cages and 5 points in a street car, than not have them.

If everything was done correctly, you don't have the typical "I have no idea how to mount a racing harness", harnesses, with a properly mounted seat, it might be ok. However, a harness needs to be tight, to keep you from moving around. Staying in your seat is one thing, but a 3 point belt will stretch, and keep you from hitting anything too hard, but not mush up your insides too bad.
