Christine:

The easiest way is to take the Q to a dealer or speciality Nissan shop that has a $7,000 diagnostic computer. There is a blinking light method to read a group of major codes.

If you don't have the thousand page Factory Service Manual and all the technical service bullentins and are not handy with tools...........learming automotive technology and mainteanance can be a time consumming task.........not technically difficult since half a million people make their living this way just not usually a female occupation [doesn't stimulate them the way it does males].

Don't take this too hard but a female owned Q with a check engine light on probably needs significant work................the check engine light is a rare occurance because so few items were monitored prior to 1996.

It is a good idea to pay an expert to diagnose and to examine everything and to generate a written list of ALL the defects so you may decide if the car is worth fixing.

Every 1991 we see needs at least $3,000 and some $10,000 to return to near new functionality................not buying the car new or at a few years old gives you no comparison to how the mighty have fallen.

We rarely see 91 Q owned by woman because the costs exceed the happiness the car provides. [ your occupation jeweler might be the exception watch battery changing, soldering, mechanicals etc..........not meaning to lump you into a generic group of unhandy].

Actually we have 2 customers [both retired school teachers] who bought the Q brand new and have spent the $30,000+ necessary to maintain it until today [most are low mileage ocassional use cars].

A typical repair is 45% labor and 55% parts..............parts can be reduced by buying used [wrecks] or 25% discounted from dealers shipping via the web out of state.

Another warning: So few technicans were trained on these cars a few hundreds country wide and with turn over etc AND AGE there are still probably only a few hundred people in US QUALIFIED to deal with significant problems.

More Q are destroyed by incompetent [on the Q] mechanics and owners trying without enough experience than those that die a natural death.

Good Luck.

Well, if you are near Tacoma, Charlie is the service manager down there. But the rates are probably no cheaper than Kirkland.

The best Senior Infiniti Tech I encountered is Eric at Beaverton Infiniti. The rate is less, there is no sales tax, and they don't mind if you bring your own parts procured from Joe http://www.infinitipartsusa.com

Might email MiscrosoftQ45T and see where he takes his in Seattle.

And you need to read the timing chain guide article before you embark on anything, including starting the car again. Seriously.

We can help you get your car into an as new condition, but as Q45tech said, it won't be inexpensive (compared to a Kia) if you don't have the tools and some ability.
