I have a 1991 Q45 and on the instrument cluster, there is a "security" light that flashes. What is this for? Is it actually hooked up to anything?

Just by reading the last 24 hours, I have learned that the security option for the car disables the starter if the security is tripped. So going off of that, i would assume that yes, it is hooked up to something and isn't just there for the sake of flashing.

Was that an answer or another question?

Anyways. I found out my Q45 had an alarm/antitheft feature when I had the windows down and the car was locked. I reached in, unlocked the door, and opened it. The lights started flashing and the horn started blaring. Putting the key in the lock stopped it.

You can set the alarm off if you open the trunk with the key while the rest of the car is locked.

When you lock the car, the amber bar will flash under the word SECURITY indicating that it's armed.

If only I had a keyless entry and remote start with it.

OK, so I thought my starter was bad, but maybe I have set the alarm off for the security light IS flashing, and I have been all over this car, have half the dash out of it, been working under the hood, in the trunk, disconnecting and reconnecting multiple times, etc, etc, etc.

$64.0000 question - How do I turn it off????

OK, I tried a few things, and it does look like the starter is bad. Question - I have my dash out and am about to put in an aftermarket alarm. Anyone have any forwarnings about putting in an aftermarket when the factory alarm is already in there? I guess I need to figure out the wiring diagram for the factory alarm before I start messing with the after market one....

From what I hear from board members, an aftermarket alarm is a big hassle.

The T3 techs apparently won't touch your Q with a 10-foot pole unless the factory alarm has been returned to stock.

I've been considering getting an Avital or a Viper kit myself. It's cold out here, and I'm tired of fumbling for my keys. I'd like to press a button and have my doors unlock and engine start.

It's one of the last things I can really worry about though. Engine and transmission stuff is more pressing.

i have installed a compustar 2wss-as, Pro P2W9000FM-as (canadian version) and a pro p2wss-as (canadian version) on a 95 infiniti q45.

there are a few different caveats about installing an alarm on the q45.

for instance, the trunk pin switch can be accessed from the body control module. it can also be accessed from the trunk. to access lock/unlock you must access it at the drivers switch, not the local control unit or bcm. i'll have to check my notes to see if it is the key cylinder switch or the lock knob switch. to access power windows you must access it at both drivers switch and the master switch (center console). hood pin switch can be accessed from the bcm, or hood pin switch. trunk release switch must be used with a relay (but hey you knew that already).

the factory alarm is disabled by unlocking the door (either with the key or remote). so as long as your aftermarket unlocks the door as the factory key would, the factory alarm is disarmed. fyi, with the doors locked and aftermarket and factory alarms armed, aftermarket alarm can start the car with out any additional signals (compustar offers factory disarm options for remote start).

aftermarket alarm installs aren't a simple task and on the q45 it's even more tricky. don't let you local installer sucker you with an "I know" or "We do these kinds of cars all the time". The LAN system is one of the most sophisticated electrical systems i've ever seen on a car. and without respecting it, your aftermarket alarm will never work. any your q might be damaged as well.

also q45 electrical wiring diagram (FSM) is needed for successful installation. oh and the all-in-one installers wiring diagram cd/dvd's are incorrect!!!
