I am trying to diagnose a problem with my Q45's transmission. I have had a shudder with the transmission at different times while driving. Just recently when shifting from park to reverse there has been a clunk. Now it is actually slipping while driving and the tachometer fluctuates or revs. Anyone have similar problems and what was the solution.

Mind had a shutter last year. I changed fluid and added a bottle of Lubeguard Red and the shutter went away. However, I would periodically hear a slight grinding noise that - at the end - sounded like someone throwing money into a blender -- then the transmission seized.

Where are you located?

We have a member 3 hours away in the Seattle area that might be able to help or make a recommendation.

Okay. How do I make contact? By the way, what happened after your transmission seized?

Go find a shop that has the BG brand of transmission flush machine. Have the transmission flushed and add half a bottle of LubeGuard Red and report back. If it works, it works. If not, its new transmission time.

I had the transmission flushed by the dealer in June of this year. I'm not sure if it made a difference in the shudder - that was intermittant before. Maybe it happened less after that was done. Last week is when it started slipping, for lack of a better term. There's no noise associated with it, it just isn't responding normally when I accelerate. The tachometer needle jumps, but it doesn't have the power it should. I can get up to freeway speed and then it seems okay, but when I accelerate, again, not the appropriate power and the tachometer needle jumps.

In your opinion, will the dealer have technicians with experience on such an old model? Is it better to go to a transmission specialist? Are parts still available?

Thanks!

buy 10-12 qts of your choice transmission oil and drain whats in the pan.pour 2-3 qts untill its full again and run your car for 10-15 minutes cycling through gears.keep doing this till all the old dirty fluid is gone and you see only a nice red color fluid drain out.top off the transmission once again and add some lubeguard RED.i did this along with new shift solenoids and vb gaskets and my Q shifts great(knocks on wood) :squint:

Goodluck to you

Sounds like your clutches are slipping. Probably transmission time.

I dont want o be negative but that transmission is almost certainly a goner and soon.
Dont go on any long trips. :frown:

What is happening the seals are damaged and you lack pressure to properly shift.

Winter makes such problems become acute ,as the cold seals are more shrunken and more fluid bypasses them.

If your car does not have an aftermarket bypass transmission cooler, but still the factory heat exchanger in the radiator, then idle the car for some minutes before trying to move it.

when fully warmed up it still <might> work for a while as the seals swell as they warm and so the gear may "catch".

Basically its a goner, but with the above method, maybe , just maybe, you might be able to squeeze a few more miles out of it before it goe,s giving u a chance to get money for the transmission.

A normal transmission shop is fine, just make sure you pick one woth a decent rep.
its like any other transmission except parts are a bit more..

If you have a little extra $$ (I think not likely but i mention it for comepleness) this might be a good time to add a upgraded valvebody from levelten, NJ.

Fred... :)

PS:
I would not spend the bucks on extra transmission fluid at this point...

Good to hear from you Fred. I see that after all these years, you still have not found the spell-check feature!!!!! Good info as usual, but painful to read as usual too!

I learned about how a delaership works which is good.. but it was a really bad sales month .. at one point we had only 2 walk ins in one day and 5 salesmen on duty....

Maybe I should ahve hung it out abit longer.... the next month was great in sales I heard

Tough business, especially for the sales staff- it seems 1 or 2 of the entire team make decent money while the rest come and go and have a hard time making a living......been doing business with Nationwide since 1982 when I bought my first car from them.....and about 5 more since then, and the sales staff turnover has always been huge, both on the Nissan and Infiniti side.

yes,

I loved the cars but have to make a living too.
And some customers (or almost customers) were pretty unpleasant.

The nicer guys were usually the ones who could barely afford the car but really wanted it.
