I've searched but have not came across any decisive wiring diagrams for the 1991 Q45 Bose stereo. (And not just on NICO either )

Read through the Bose topics & found nothing except " you need one of these adapters", which , for me, doesn't help at all.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Looked in the FSM and I don't see anything that will help. I think your best bet is to look at the connectors at each amp assembly. You should have switched 12v (on when tuner is on), two grounds (- power supply) and a (-) audio feed, and a (+) audio feed. My guess is that the negative amp power ground and positive amp feed is the same color code at all four speaker locations.

The audio feeds should be different at each corner (at least the positive one). A good multimeter is your best friend for tracing these things... You should be able to continuity test the front amp connectors with the radio harness to confirm the audio feeds for the front speakers at least...

Q451990 - You are correct on the power/ ground for the amplifiers being the same for all four speakers. Keep in mind that this is for my '91 Q45, (Standard Model), I'm unsure if this is applicable for any other years.

It's always good to verify...

I found a link I was looking for earlier.

That is a good link, unfortunately it's not applicable to my Q45.

I took apart one of the speakers/amps in the hope that there would be some type of labeling somewhere.

It turns out that the amplifier circuit board's only identifying marks are reference codes for electronic components. (transistors,resistors,capacitors,etc.....)

Here are the wires that provide the signal from the headunit to the speakers.

Front right speaker - Black/White & White/ Green

Front left speaker - Black & White

Rear right speaker - Black/Red & White/Red

Rear left speaker - Black/Blue & White/Blue

(Now I just have to figure out which ones are positive & which ones are negative)

I also ran some fresh speaker wires to the rear. (Not that they're hooked up to anything though. )

During the process I found a black box under each side of the backseat.

On the passengerside it appears to be for the CD changer, while the one on the driverside appears to be for the phone.

Also found that the Rear Driverside speaker had a "Remanufactured" sticker on it , while the passengerside speaker looked to be original.

Service records state that both were replaced, but I was getting an oddball crackling/popping out of the Rear Pass. side speaker prior to this little adventure.

(I'm slowly growing more & more tempted to just pull out the factory system and slap in an aftermarket one.)

When were they replaced? I wonder if the rear pass speaker now falls under the recall for updated amps.

Infiniti has it on record as the rear speakers being replaced in July 1995.

(But didn't the recall not go into effect until November 1998?)

The TSB/Recall Bulletin (ITB98-056a) that I have is dated March 31, 1999. Covers 1991-1992 G50s, all VINS. I would call Bose at 1-800-231-2673 and let them know that they were replaced prior to the recall and are now making a noise. Mention that the fronts are doing the same thing (wink, wink). Bose has an "unwritten" recall on the fronts on the models that had the rear amp recall. The logic being that customers will be afraid that the fronts are likely to be a fire hazard too - even though they're not.

The advantage to having this done at Bose is that they'll replace the speaker cones too - not just the amp. You'll have to pay for shipping there, but that should be it. The downside is no tunes for a few weeks. I would try a fully functioning Bose system before gutting it... when it's firing on all four corners it's not bad! If you decide to replace them later, a fully function set of four rebuilt amps would be worth a decent amount of $$ in our B/S/T forum or eBay.

Thanks for the phone #.

I liked the quality of the stereo system before they started popping & crackling.

A member on floridasr20s.com was parting out a G50 that had severe fire damage originating at the rear passengerside speaker a while back.

(Scared the bejeezus out of me when he sent me pics. Nightmares of my car aflame ensued the following night )

NHTSA had a recall for the rear speaker amplifiers on Nov. 5,1998 wth an estimated 28,970 units effected. (ID#98V284000)

Well ,I just got off the phone with Bose.

They'll replace the rear amplifiers only, at no charge.

The front amplifiers are $75.00 each.

Guy said that this is for the amplifiers only, not the speakers themselves.

So no free speaker rebuilds for me apparently.

Oh well, guess I'll have to look at getting new speakers while the rear amps are being rebuilt.

If that's the case, I would take it to the dealership, so that you don't have to ship them... the speakers should be fine, but new ones would be better if someone else (bose) was picking up the tab...

I ended up gutting the entire Bose System and put in good Kenwood 6x9's at all 4 corners and a new HU. No external amp and it sounds much better than any Bose system I've ever heard. It was cheaper than dealing with all the separate amp issues and lack of CD player.
