I am having a problem with a 91 Q. I will be driving along & loose power steering, a minute or 2 later power steering comes back to normal & will randomly repeat every few minutes. The belts, fluid, rack are all good. Speedo stays ok when I loose power steering so I don't think it is the speed sensor. Someone said it may be the power steering control unit under the dash. Has anyone tackled this job? How hard is it to get at or are there any other suggestions as to what may be causing this problem? TIA.

I've replaced the control thingy in the dash for exactly the same symptoms you list.

The Q has variable assist based on speed. A controller varies an output power voltage based on speed. When it fails, the control voltage goes to zero and system works in fail safe mode (the amount of assist needed at 130 MPH) If fail safe mode was the amount of assist needed at park, then it would be unsafe at hihgway speed

It takes a few hours. 40 min each way for some who's done it before.

New the part is about $500, I got mine at junk yard for $26. ( i had to talk them into letting me pull it my self)

Where exactly is the power steering control unit under the dash? What years of the Q's use the same unit as my 91'? Thanks.

first off do you have the bible sized service manual? It will walk you through the steps of testing the output of this device with a voltmeter at the consult connector before you need to rip into anything.

Roughly speaking it is directly forward of your right knee, about 4 inches inside the dash.

You'll need to pull several panels to get access to it.

1. Steering wheel covers2. Lower driver's side cover (above the pedals)3. Central Console cover

Looking up and in with your head under the steering wheel, you'll see a "pack of cards" sized aluminum box. An inch wide metal strap runs across it at a diagonal and bolts with two screws to the cruise control computer. It has a single wire harness

The identical model is used in at least 90-94, and possibly beyond that.
