ok im new to this site but i have been reading on it for over a month to find answers. i have found alot that has help me so thank you to all the good advice. but now i have a ? that i cant find an answer to. my 91 q has a real bad power issue. if i take off real slow it seems to b fine. alot better when its cold. idk much about these cars owning my first one im confused onn afew issues. not only does it have the lose of power it smells like raw gas in the mornings. its my only car and i just put a new transmission in it. and for no reason. was told the transmission was bad cuz it wont shift into first while in drive. starts in 2nd. but it shifts just fine manualy. so i did notice that the few times it did s*** alone into 1st the speedo was working. my speedo has been acting up and was wanting to know if that could cause the transmission not to drop into 1st gear by itself. also i tested my injectors for the lose of power and the rearinjector on the driver side is reading nothing. i dont have the extra $ at the moment to replace them all but i do plan on going to the phase 2 asap. i need to know wat other kind of car i can pull a used injector out of from a junk yard that will be the same as mine. i just need to make it a few months till i can park it for a rebuild

thanks
Matt

Hi Matt - Welcome to Edo. Where are you located?

The 91 model Q's start in 2nd gear -- from the factory. My 91 was like that when I got it. I upgraded the Transmission Control Unit (TCP) to one from a 94 model (1st gear start model) that I pulled from a salvage yard.

There may be a member here with a 1st gear start TCU for sale.

The TCU is located behind the (US driver) side kick panel next to the emergency brake. Remember to disconnect the battery before changing the TCU and look behind a carpet tab (closest to the firewall) for a 10mm nut that holds the kick panel to the floor in addition to any trim clips.

I see you are familiar with the Phase II injector upgrade. I upgraded my 91 to use Phase II (BWD Black Dot) injectors in 2010. I've had no issues with the upgrade.

How long has the speedometer issue been occurring? Did it start with the transmission replacement?

z32 injectors should work but you want the good style injectors....or just get another injector from a later model Q45 but still G50 chassis. Series II VH I think may have better injectors then the 1st gens

thank you for the replies. the speedo had a "loose wire" when i got it a month ago. it has only worked a few time for me but the guy i got it from said he used to smack the dash and it would kick on. but i just had the whole dash out and there is no loose wire in it. i think its shot. idk anything about this computerized stuff lol. i have a TSU for it but not sure what year he got it from. the transmission and the tcu came with the car. so far i havent had an issue with the new transmission but i have a good spare. i was wanting to convert it to 5 speed manual later down the road to. i realy do like the car but i got it running like crap so i would like to keep it but need it running better. i want to feel the v8 lol.

My cousin had a Nissan Stanza that had an intermittent speedometer. Banging on he dash would get the speedo working for a bit. We eventually tried changing the speed sensor, didn't fix it. I finally pulled out his dash gauges and re-soldered every solder spot I could find, on the back of the speedometer circuit board, and it has worked fine ever since then. My point is that it's probably a cold solder joint on the speedometer, so get in there with an iron and fix it. Same company probably built both those speedometers and solder definitely does fail with age. Couldn't hurt to try that fix.

I don't think a plug and play attempt at the injectors is worth it. Especially if you don't know what the history of the junkyard ones. Just let it run like crap until you have enough money to replace all 8 to phase II

What city are you in?'

15 hour drive to iowa from where I am in MA. I would have to truck it. I wouldn't try driving an unknown vehicle. Take some pictures of the ext/interior and I will consider!

Really Steve. There are no Q45's closer to you? The 1994 Q45a black on black has 230K miles. But I got a good deal on it! Keep looking closer! The Q I bought needs rust fixed in the usual places, both 2 inner/2 outer tie rods and the Active needs help. Other than that the Interior is mint and the exterior is decent, That putting it nicely.

Meh. I don't know. If the interior/exterior is mint I'll handle the rest. There was a 1991 grey w/ blue leather in FLA I passed on. There was another white w/ shamu interior I passed on. The time will come

Trust me things seem more clear when the car is on a lift and you really see what's wrong with it. You can only tell so much from the interior/exterior/engine bay. Only some as crazy as me would pick up a Q45a with 230K miles as a project car. And all because I want to see what the hype about active suspension is!
