I kept playing with different refrigerants on my q being to lazy to pull the compressor and change the oil. I had settled on a mixture of m66 416a and 22. worked great till the high discharge pressure blew the seals out and dumped the oil charge.

So I found a new in the box comp on ebay. I will change the oil and dryer and do a r-11 flush on the system. Then recharge with 134a. Will the condensor handle 134? I saw a new one for a 95 on Ebay Would that one be better or would it even fit?

Also I still have 3 cans of r-12......any offers?

The R12 condenser will only be 85% efficient with R134a, the cause of much unhappiness with conversions. R134a condensers are of a different type but you cannot use with out replacing piping and dryer and sensors.

The sensor switches and dryer media [breakdown internally] will be the wrong pressure for R134a.

Propane. Very close to R22. Not as dangerous as some people would want you to believe. Works with mineral oil, which also helps your compressor live a long happy life.

I had a van that was charged with propane. Worked ok but had very high discharge pressure like around 400 psi

I guess I will have to live with the 134a since it is cheap and the r-12 price is insane. Now when you say the dryer is incompatable does this mean it breaks down with the poe oil? I will post my results when I get it done.

Not if you dont' regard flammabel gas under pressure as a problem.

Today's word is BOOM! followed by FIRE!

Oh yeah, it's still not entirely safe. I'd probably go R134a instead of propane too, but if I didn't want R134a, it's prob what I'd use. If you get into an accident that ruptures the line enough to release a large amount of concentrated propane into an area that also has a substantial spark or fire, it could add to it. Although at that point I think I'd not be so concerned about that. As for the high side pressure, I dunno why it would be 400+psi unless maybe the system was charged with the same weight of propane as is called for with R134a. If I am remembering correctly, it should take just a little over half the R134a charge in an equivalent size system.
