91 nissan 240sx run great untill warm them makes noise

My car just started acting up. it runs great when you first start it, has plenty of power then when it gets warm the engine starts to chatter sort of sounds like a really bad spark knock. Its bad enough so that i dont dare drive it. It also starts to smoke and the exaughst smell funny but this only happens after it gets warm. I checked the spark plugs and replaced them and that wasent it. I took off the converter from the exoughst thinking maybe it was plugged but it doent seem that bad. i havent replaced that yet but has anyone ran into this sort of problem before? also what should the timing be set at??? Any help would be great thanks.

it would help if you were able to take a video clip of the sound. These engines are relatively simple creatures and sounds are fairly easy to diagnose if we hear them.

I will try to get some type of sound. you cant really here is that well when the car is not moving. ill see what i can do.
