So I just got this 91 maxima, and no one has explained to me how the power door locks work. My problem is that when i get out of my car, I hit the door lock switch, and when i close the door all 4 locks pop back open. apparantly there is some kind of programing or a security feature that has to be turned on by the key in the door??? I dont know exactly, theres nothing in the manual about it.
HELP!!
Thanks!

I had the same problem, but I think I figured it out. It only happens when you manually open the drivers lock by hand. So what I did to fix the problem was turn the key and start the car, close the door and if the driver side lock is unlock, push it lock manually. Then unlock with the lock switch, it should work properly now. And yes, it has something to do with the security system. Hope this helps...

yeah its cool, im sure it is. I read something in the manual about 2 keys, one back up and one a master key. I dont have a master key so maybe thats the one the turns on the system? Oh well...

This is a pretty common problem. It's an issue with the lock timer, which controls power lock behavior (when you lock either front door by manual button OR power switch, the power locks are engaged for all four doors).

The car's actually designed not to let you lock your keys in the car. So if the key is in the ignition and either front door is open, the locks will stubbornly unlock themselves.

So is there any way to get around this lock timer issue? any way to get the doors to lock properly?

Repair or replace the lock timer unit, which is located in the driver side footwell on the right side of the steering column. There may be visible damage to components or bad solder joints, so if you're comfortable with a soldering iron you may be able to fix it yourself.

I wish I could provide a picture of the unit, but Google Image search is letting me down.
