my 91 240sx hatch all of a sudden one evening decided not to start. so i jumped it thinking the battery was dead, it started right up and i drove home 2 hrs and stopped for gas an hour out and shut the car off and it started when i got back in. it was raining but this wasnt the first time i drove this car through the rain. anyway i get home and the next morning the car doesnt start again. jumped it and nothing. voltage on the battery was 12.7. i turn the key and hear a click. so the relay must be working. everything else in the car works. so i think maybe the starter or fuse. i take the starter and battery into autozone and they both test good so its not them.

what could be my problem if the battery is fine, the starter is fine, and i hear a click when i turn the key. Since i hear the click it cant be the ignition or the clutch switch. Its weird that all of a sudden the car wont start.

Im thinking it is most likely a ground so i ordered new wires to mount the battery in the back but i want to get it to start first before i start moving stuff around so i am going to try the new wires and new terminals but i dont know what the two wires are that are also connected to the positive leads on the battery

any help would be great thanks

Hi. I would not trust the auto part store starter testers to be honest. My SR starter was acting up on the car, but seemed to work fine on the benches (took it to Autozone and Advance). By your description I would still suspect the starter.

If you want something free to try you could try smacking the starter with a hammer or wrench or something next time it acts up. Sometimes a failing starter will work after getting hit. May want to disconnect the battery first to avoid any potential of being zapped. If it works after being smacked around - time to replace/rebuild.

Welcome to NICO by the way :)

Thanks for the welcome. I watched what they did and it's just the power cable and signal cable and since it was spinning I trusted that it's fine. The problem ended up being the little rubber piece at the end of the bracket that pushes the clutch switch in to allow the signal to be sent to the starter. I also cleaned up the ground wire for that. Thanks for the help though.

Bought this car about 2 weeks ago as a daily so that I can put some work into my other car and then within a year possibly engine swap the 240 and continue daily driving it. This is my second 91 s13 last one I owned was about 5-6 years ago

Those rubber pieces are failing on a lot of cars , the one on the brake switch broke on mine causin the brake light to stay on all the time and drained my battery, same thing happened to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago , i guess after 24 years its time to get them replaced

yeah my brake one fell off a week after the clutch one. you can find them online for i believe its 5-6$ each. Im just going to machine new ones out of polyurethane or something like that (depends on what i can find). i might 3D print it but i dont think that material will last. I have heard of people super gluing pennies to the brackets and it works. I believe that the material needs to have some flex in it especially where it touches the sensor that way it doesn't over stress it.

heres the link for the part just in case
