I've got a 91 240sx cali emmisions stock everything. I just got the car and just drove it yesterday. Today I was letting of the gas a heard a wierd banging noise comming from under the car. I jack the car up and its comming from the resotor? or muffler? right before the muffler at the back. you can see it expand like something is pounding it from the inside. What would cause this???

whoa......talk about strange gremlins............does the resonator rattle in any way? if so, it could be that the cat has came apart and parts of it are lodged in the resonator.......? where in Okc are you? I'm in Mustang.

sorry...last weekend i had my son, and we pal'd around......sure seems strange having the resonator expand.......is your resonator all steel like mine was? i say 'was' because mine is in a scrap yard somewhere now......is the rest of your exhaust in good shape? maybe it has the old 'inside out' rust problem? my old exhaust was all shiny and new looking, but totally ate up with rust on the inside.......now my new exhaust is shiny and new, but loud as hell

could be the exhaust banging up against the under body of the car. did you check to make sure all the braces and bushings securing it are in place?

the exhaust is attached right to the engine so it moves with it. worn motor mounts cause exessive play and when you let off the gas the engine may tilt more to one side. instead of tilting one way under acceleraton it is going the other way while fighting the car to slow it down.

if you open the hood, does the engine move alot under idle or when u press on the gas? if it does your mounts may be very worn, you can try to fix or make new braces for the exhaust if this is the case, best thing to do is get the mounts fixed (if they are indeed the problem).
