could be the exhaust banging up against the under body of the car. did you check to make sure all the braces and bushings securing it are in place?
the exhaust is attached right to the engine so it moves with it. worn motor mounts cause exessive play and when you let off the gas the engine may tilt more to one side. instead of tilting one way under acceleraton it is going the other way while fighting the car to slow it down.
if you open the hood, does the engine move alot under idle or when u press on the gas? if it does your mounts may be very worn, you can try to fix or make new braces for the exhaust if this is the case, best thing to do is get the mounts fixed (if they are indeed the problem).
