Hey gang.. I have a problem. My 91 240sx (automatic) just decided to stop moving. It's really strange though. The dealership said I need a new transmission. I think they are full of it.

Here is what happens. I can start the car and put it in drive. It runs fine but the first time I stop at a light the car shifts into neutral. When the light changes it will not go. If I turn the car off and back on I can shift it into drive and it runs fine again.

ANY IDEAS???

could probably be the shift solenoids of the transmission...any check engine lights?

i had a transmission do a similar thing (non-nissan) where it wouldn't shift up until i was at redline. another case was when there was an issue with the gear selector was having problems and had to be replaced. could be an ECU/TCU problem, too.

Your transmission is going out Sir. Same thing happened to me when my transmission went out. It would start and drive until i came to a stop, then not go once the light changed to green. For a while i could turn it off and then restart it to get it going again. But after a 2-3 weeks it finally died on me. Time for a 5-speed swap.

Thanks for the info! I have a friend that had suggested the solenoids but I didn't know if he really knew what he was talking about. Now that I hear it from someone else I think I will try that route. If that doesn't work then bring on the 5 speed.
