The surface of muffler of my '91 240SX SE is rusting out, but the exhaust pipe looks still okay to me. In this case, is it possible to replace the muffler only and weld it to the pipe, not to replace the whole exhaust system? If so, how much does it cost? Could you recommend any muffler for my 240SX?

Thanks,Won

If it's just surface rust, you don't need to replace it at all. If the walls of the muffler are rusted through, that is a different story. You can swap just the muffler. If you want to make more power and give up a small amount of comfort, get an aftermarket system or have the entire system after the cat swapped. Otherwise I'd just stick with an OEM replacement style of muffler.

Thanks for your reply. BTW, I went to a local service shop, and got an estimation of $237.47 including $162.39 muffler and $49.00 labor for replacing the muffler and tips. This sounds expensive than I thought. How much do you think it is reasonable for just swapping the muffler?

the labor is about the right price, I paid 65 to have my new muffler put on, I bought another one online though
