I have a 92 240sx dohc that had a bad auto transmission. I picked one up yesterday at a local junk yard and swapped it in. Now this transmission does not want to go into 1st gear or od. We couldn't get the speedo out so it's not hooked up right now. The car is grabbing very well in 2nd gear and reverse and goes into drive but still with no od or 1st gear.

I hope I don't have to take this transmission back out and there's something I'm missing here.

Any insight.

My old transmission's bearings were going out. You want to talk about some ungodly whining and hard shifts. Especially after it was warmed up. I was told by a transmission tech that it was the core support bearings. The transmission actually started to bind up and the engine would shut off. When we took the transmission out a couple of days ago there was all kind's of metal shavings and there was even a hunk of metal in the pan. It was about the sive of a my pinky tip.

I've read of people having trouble with their transmission slipping out of gear but when they turn it off and back on again it would go into gear. Mine was also doing this but I believe it was because all the metal shavings were getting sucked up onto the filter and settling back down after being turned off.

Oh... and I forgot the new transmission is just free revving in first gear. Whether it's in the manual 1st or in 1st in drive. I don't think I hear the downshift solenoid clicking like it's supposed to according to my chilton's manual. But I don't think this would cause a problem with it goin into 1st do you? Also. my manual said something about reconnecting a vacuum line when you reconnect the speedo. I didn't see one on this transmission or my old one.

first of all chilton manuals suck. anyhow, it sounds like you got problems with this trans internally as well, you could go in and try to fix it, but if you got a return policy on it just get another as the cost to restore this one would likely exceed what you paid for it.

Just took my car out and drove it around for awhile and it started going into first as well and second but then no drive or od. But now it goes into all gears but only if you baby it. I've read of people having this strange shifting problem with their trannies so I tried turning the car off whenever it quit going into drive. And it worked. If you get on it it messes up. Shifts don't feel quite right.

Now I know my other transmission was bad, but at least it shifted through all gears all the time.

I never knew these trannies had problems like this, so I'm returning the transmission and swapping to a manual.
