Hi,

My 91 240 SX with 133K miles will not start(No cranking at all). I know it is not a battery problem as the battery is new and the stereo runs fine even without starting. Before I take it to the mechanic, Could someone enlighten me as to what could be the problem ? Also, I would like to get the transmission fluid flushed at the same time. What is the recommended procedure for this ? And changing the timing chain, How much am I looking at part/labor for a timing chain replacement ?

Thanks in advance,Saleem

starter or something related to it most likely. if the car has power to the radio and interior lights, but wont turn over, then its got to be the starter, or something related to it. is there any related fuses that might be blown? as far as flushing the transmission fluid, theres no real procedure, its pretty simplistic. id suggest picking up a factory service manual, itll tell you basic stuff like that, and help you with other things as well. the manual will save you tons of money if you do the work yourself.

Manual, I also own an Infinit where they recommed a full transmission flush and filter change using a BG machine preferably. Do I have to do the same thing for my 240 SX ?

Thanks,Saleem

it sounds to me like your starter is dead, either that or the solenoid on it has a problem

see if you can pick yourself up a rebuilt one or a brand new one, although a new one can be a little pricey

don't bother taking it to a mechanic they'll charge you way too much, you can change it in your driveway quite, easily

if you need any advice let me know, as i had to replace mine about 2 months ago

check the yellow pages then call around

i paid 50 cdn for a used one

but if you want some more security go to autozone (or whatever major store offers parts) they will probably sell you a rebuilt one with a warranty

sorry, havent been paying attention.

go outside, turn the key to start and hold it there, and start kicking the clutch pedal. if it was the starter you would atleast get the click of the solenoid.

sounds like the clutch safety switch or the ignition switch.

does the headlights dim and the radio turn off when you turn the key to start?

if rapidly operating the clutch pedal while holding the key to "start" doesnt help, you have to check the fuse for the starter.

it is unusual for the starter to fail and there be no click, unless the solenoid has totally failed.

take a 12v test light and hit the starter wire at the solenoid. have someone turn the key for you. if there is juice there, your starter is bad, if not start checking upline, first the safety on the clutch then the ign itself. there are only so many things that can go wrong with a start circuit.

oh, and good luck with it..

it is still possible that it is your battery/connections. check your negative terminal on your battery. if its not making the best connection, your starter wont turn over, even if your radio and accesories work.

even if theres not enough current to start, it should still click the solenoid.

Alright guys, here's the update. The starter was bad(atleast that's what the mechanic told me) and had it replaced for$210 including parts. How can I check if he replaced the starter ? Where is it located ?(I apologize for such a dumb question). Also had a tuneup done at the same time(Plugs, wires, filters, coolant ect). He could not do the transmission fluid drain as he could not get the plug to open. He said the fluid looks okay and he did not want to risk cracking anything by trying too hard ? Is he right or am I being taken for a ride here. He should me the fluid and it kinda looked black ? Should'nt it be red ?

Thanks,Saleem

He wouldnt even be able to check the tranmission level without getting the fill bolt out... what a moron, and 210 seems kind of high... the starter is on the intake side of the motor ( the left side if you are looking at it from the front) its under the intake manifold kinda hard to see ... if its new it will be shiny and bling bling :) what a moron about the transmission though sounds like a newb.

No, he was able to remove the fill bolt(put a finger in and showed me the fluid) but not the drain plug if there is such a thing so that the transmission fluid will drain out. I'll check the starter though.

Thanks,Saleem

ok the starter looks like this(hope it works)

if you are standing in front of your car it will be on the left,

it's pretty tricky to find, look where you're oil filter is, now look back (towards the firewall and down, there should be one small cylinder attached to one larger cylinder (as in the picture),

it will be on the left side(once again from the point of view of standing in front of you car) of the transmission

here's how to replace it

1. disconnect the negative terminal of your battery (always!!)2. disconnect the ground found on the end of the smaller cylidner3. disconnect the solenoid4. now there are 2 main bolts holding the starter in place, the one on the left is accesible from the bottom, so jack you're car up and get under the car5. it will be tight() best bet is to really spray it down with wd-40, it is a long bolt so it may take a while6. to get the other bolt i found it helpful to disconnect the 2 thick coolant hoses that go into the firewall( make sure to have a oil pan under your car so it doesn't spill everywhere)7. you should be able to see the 2nd bolt, wd-40 and a good breaker bar will take that thing off8. this part requires some help, have one person get underneath the car and another on top, this will help to guide it in, remeber to put it in the same way as it was before you took it off9screw the bolts in10.conncet coolant hoses, reconnect solenioid, reconnect ground, reconnect battery11. should be fine now
