Well, I did it - again! Waited too long as the fuel pump noise grew. Replaced the pump and filter, but the controller is el-toasto. Dealer wants US$650+ for a new controller. As the limp-home mode is to bypass the controller and run the pump at constant (full) speed and I'm retiring the Q to winery duty in about 8 months, can I just run the pump without the (way over-priced) controller??TIAjohn

Till the new pump fails again, won't be covered by parts warranty hope it last 6 months. Not sure if the fuel pressure regulator can regulate such high volume presure at idle cruise {?}.

Would this work, versus NOT replacing it at all??

So...that's a NO ? The local dealer asks US$651.97 for a controller. Are there any NICO ad dealers that can beat it, or don't they actually monitor the Q chatter? I can wait for overnight as it's been in the shop for a week already. I suspect that the pump controller varies the pump output volume/pressure by controlling the pump speed based on a parameters map and that the pressure regulator is a simple injector flow demand vs excess fuel dump-back to the tank. Most EFI that I am familiar with have a constant speed/volume/pressure pump and the pressure regulator handles flow/pressure across all operating conditions. (The Kf MFI on early 70s 911s and racing Porsches had a belt driven variable speed mechanical pump.)I appreciate your replies, BTW - there's not a lot of bling attached.TIAjohn

Make sure you add your screen name & ebay handle to the sticky, so you don't get into a bidding war with an other NICO member.

Good Luck.

What does the big number on top of it mean? Mine says 07. The one in that ad says 03.

Here's the price from one of our sponsors. I would check with some local salvage yards for a take-out. The last one I bought was $50.

Thanks, Heath. The wierd thing was that I had downloaded the Fuel Pump failure info during the day. Went out to go home and she cranked, idled for a little bit, then nada.john

Why not take the controller out and see if the pin/board/connector is in need of repair? Alot cheaper than just buying new or used.

Good tip and my first thought. But...when I said el-toasto I mean it. 4-5 fried spots and one transistor is blown off the board. I'd rather get a whole assembly.john

Is there only one electrial connector on the unit?

Are there only two screws which secure the unit? Easy DYI, I presume.

I'm considering replacing mine because of some slight weirdness after replacing the fuel pump.

Greg:

Hurry before it leaves you stranded! (Like it did to me).

Its in the trunk right above the fuel tank (pull off the liner). A couple screws hold it in place, and theres one easy connector. Takes about 5 minutes at most.

I always keep spare modules [fpcu, ecu, tcu, pscu, hvac, etc assorted every fuse, wire and a VOM and mini FSM plus FUEL FILTER] in the trunk, never tell when you are out of town [vacation] and need one. Every city has independent shops [a lift and some tools] that can help but not without the correct part and manual.

Even though I have spare MAF, TPS, CAS, IAC, EGR and Evap, injectors, you name it - never carry too much in trunk.

Did yours fail after replacing the fuel pump? Did it act weird before it failed, or did it just fail?

Mine failed about 20 miles after the pump was replaced.

My car acted funny for about a week after replacing the fuel pump (lost power at mid-RPMs when accelating), but I cleaned the contacts for the pump, relay, and FPCU and it cleared up. I've got at least 3 months before any roadtrips, so not worried about being stranded. If it holds up for a few more weeks I'll consider it OK.

RixkixThanks a bunch! Picked her up at noon today and she runs like a Q is supposed to. No fuel pump noise. Quick start. No hesitation between shifts. No bog when the throttle is mashed.Everybody else: if you've got these symptoms - replace the fuel pump. Thanks again and good luck with your part-out.john
