I started on trying to restore my Q to new now that the military has decided to give me some backpay - alot of new rubber parts, fuel pump, tires, glass etc. Anyways now that im getting past some of the most important parts I need to address the sounds coming from the engine

I have a new under engine cover (old one is MIA causing the car to get a little bit hot) and I hope installing that sometime next week will help but its not going to solve whatever is causing the problem. Hard to describe but here it goes, its a repetitive sound, gets louder when the car is in neutral, and its almost like a pump or power steering or something sound. Im not a car person by any means (and apparently I cant describe sounds worth a damn) Ive heard reference to a bad fan clutch causing alot of noise, and also could contribute to the heat problem (operating temp in about 60-90 seconds - never really goes above but I know the gauges on the Q are not too accurate - and the blade spins more then it should, i know the clutch isnt good but is it the problem?)

Trying to decide on the next repair, the fan has a couple tiny cracks in it, so its on the list. Belts are very old, they are on the list too - but I really need to solve this problem sooner rather then later. It doesn't squeak like most cars do with crappy belts, the fan blades are not rubbing on the housing... I dont know its rather hopeless, Im not sure how but I need to figure out how to get a sound recording up to help diagnose this problem

Belts, Blades,Fan Clutch, PS Pump, ??? ideas or any questions to help diagnose this?

And if i may go off topic on my own topic - pop charger or high flow intake from infinitipartsusa.com (need to do even a little something since there isnt any info about the NICO ECU going around). Again im not a car person so I really dont know anything about a pop charger (is it just a high flow intake that gives the engine a different sound?)

Thanks ahead of time for any replies

First off, THANK YOU for your service!

When you grab the fan (with the engine off, naturally! ), can you feel any side-to-side play in it (i.e., bad bearing in the water pump or clutch)?

Power steering pump noises tend to change when you turn the wheels.

The idler pullers are a MAJOR weak point on Qs - The bearings go bad (there are scads of previous posts on symptoms, finding lower-cost replacement bearings, etc. - use the SEARCH function to find 'em).

Well there is more play in it then I would think it was made for (spinning by hand, it has little )

I do get a bit of noise when turning the wheel, and alot more the farther I turn it, also its a bit stiff when the car is first started, but this lasts only a minute or so

I will dig into info on the idler pulleys and see what that comes up with. Thanks for the response Skibane

I would guess your idler pulleys too. If you need a fan clutch, I have the one pictured below for sale. It turns very smoothly with no loose play. I also just sold a set of idler pulleys, but I have an extra brand new bearing left over from when I changed all mine. NOPI auto may charge around $10 to press it in for you. If you need a whole set, I come across them every now and then. Let me know if you need anything.

PS; Congrats on owning the most badass G50 of all!!!

all right free time again and that means time to get back to work

Ordering the idler pulley from Joe

Very interested in getting the clutch from you Drew - toss me an email ( [email protected] )

No idea what NOPI auto is or what they would have to press in heh, nor anything about bearings - so if im going to need any im more then happy to buy them from you (do they come with the order from joe?)

Im new to this car stuff, probably too new to be doing much good for her but the Q needs some love. Any advice at this point would be good, if there isnt a howto somewhere it probably wont get done (at least anytime soon by me - DIY for the win)
