hey guys.
my '90 vh45 blew up (oops) and i bought a new one sight unseen (they're hard to come by where im from). it's a 93 im pretty sure, but other than the obvious (and inconsequential) differences (like no siamese ports) they seem pretty similar. it's now in the car and plumbed and the only connector that doesnt fit is the CAS plug.

i'm wondering if i can just change the plug (i have the one to suit) an if the 90 ecu will run a 93 motor.

cheers guys
Matt

All I can speculate on is the ECM. I don't know of many changes in the engines upto 95, that would make the ECMs not work interchangeably.

The CAS, my quick googling hasn't enlightened me on what it is and what it does. Got pictures?

cam angle sensor. the big blob on the front right of the engine. these parts appear to not be interchangable, however if i put my old upper timing cover on, the old CAS might fit too?

while googling for pics of the CAS i found this thread that answers most of my q's

From comparing the FSMs, the 90 and 93 should have the same CAS. The change should be with the 1994 model year, so I suspect you got an early '94 engine out of a '94 that was manufactured in 1993... The ECUs should work, but I'm not sure what to do about the CAS. The 90-93 had a sub-CAS connector, where the '94 appears to not have that.

I did an engine swap a few years back for my nephew. He had a 1990Q that needed an engine and we had a 1995 Q with front end damage. I swapped the 95 engine into his 90 and the only thing I had to do different was cut and splice the two connectors for the CAS from the 95 to the 90. Oh yeah. In 91 they changed the IACV connector style from the rectangular shape to a more rounded one. You could either swap your IACV over to the 95 engine or cut and splice the connector from the 95Q to the 90 harness. There will also be an additional connector for the EGR temp sensor that was used on 94-96 models. You can remove that sensor if you want and swap the plug from the other EGR valve to the one that is on the 95 or you can just leave it as is and tuck the connector away in the back. I verified the wiring of the CAS by comparing schematics between the 90 and the 95 manuals.

Hope that helped,
Matt
