Hey.. just a curiosity question here.. Got a 90 Stanza.. been "worked on" quite a bit... one nitch it has is that when the oil gets low, I got a lifter than loses its prime and starts tapping away... its sort of my 'low oil indicator'. Now that the rpm is set high and idles steadily, I notice it alot more now.. and yes, I do tend to use alot more oil now than in previous years... Are the lifters themselves replaceable or should I not even worry with it. Once I get oil capacity/pressure back up to level it stops. Also, give me an idea of how to check oil pressure.. (correct psi reading would be helpful, seeing as I do everything blind and never used a FSM) I wanna make sure its set right as well. I certainly hope that thing doesnt decide to crap out.. I'm tired of tearing this thing apart lol

everything is replaceable...just a matter of how much lol. Yeah lifters shouldn't be too expensive though. Have you checked the oil pump or the oil pickup?

Thanks.. last time I looked at the oil pump/pickup was when I did the timing chain about 3 years ago (mind you the car only had about 200 miles on it in 2 years)... am tempted to replace the oil pump just because.. well because I've replaced most everything else on the outside of the motor lol

Only problem is, I cant tell which lifter is giving me fits... short of a stethescope, its kinda hard to tell other than getting smacked in the face with oil while putting an ear down to the rocker arms lol

To replace the lifter.. (ka24e m/t) can it be done without removing the head?

Txs mucho

I'm assuming the motor is a KA24E. If so, then it sounds like you have low oil pressure which could be caused by several factors. Worn rod/main bearings. Plugged up oil filter. Dirty oil pickup. Most of the time it's the oil pump which may be worn and not producing the proper oil pressure/volume.

You can check the pressure very easily by installing a temporary mechanical oil pressure gauge. You would remove the oil sensor which is located next to the oil filter and install the mechanical oil pressure gauge in it's place; you may need to get an 1/8 BSPT to 1/8 NPT adapter to hook up the gauge. With the engine fully warmed up, the pressure should be as follows:idle - at least 11 psi3000 RPM - 60 to 70 psi

If the oil pump needs to be replaced, it's easy to do so on a KA24E as it bolts on externally.
