90 sohc engine rattle

my girls 240sx is making a rattling sound on start up that is extremly loud and when i hit 2000-3000 rpm it also rattles its not a constant rattle but is a on off rattle sounds like its scraping on the cover or somthing. im just getting tired of hearing it and i want to fix it any idea how much for this type of repair. i have the tools to do almost anything.

have you listened to see were the rattle is coming from.Is it coming from the front or the rear of the engine.

check all of your heatshields on the exhaust. mabey one of the bolts came loose?

well whatever you do make sure its not the timing chain cause if it cuts through the timing cover or snaps the car is sunk

i had the same problem it was a heat shield, the smaller one near the bottom of the exaust manifold, it is hard to get to but i just bent mine back with vise grips and never heard from it again.

well its not the heat shield on the exhaust manifold; i tryed tighting it down and all the bolts broke, so i just took it off and the rattle is comming from the front of the engine. but i havent cheaked the ones on the bottom
