Ok I know there's a topic like this in search but I can't seem to find any related to my issue.

My odometer works intermittently, or at least til now. I hit 167k (took a while due to sticking) and it just won't turn from that. Everything else (speedo and tach) works. How would I go about fixing this issue (as a DIY)?

I definitely want to fix it. I just can't handle things that don't work. Even if it's a light bulb that goes in a spot that I'll never see, if its out I gotta fix it.

Replace the cluster. Any idea how difficult this is?

Evan,Got one if you need it. Make an offer. Reads at 132k. Not too difficult install, just need to remove dash trim pieces and unscrew the cluster.LMK.Paul

email sent.

Yeah id say itd take about an hour-hour.5 to do it.. pretty easy.

you could take pauls odo and roll it foreward to the exact mileage yours reads..... I might take yours apart to see if it could be fixed.

I took my instrument cluster out a couple of months age to replace bulbs. The job is very easy but I would look at the FSM drawings to know where the pawls and clips are so you don't pry in the wrong spot. The are also a couple of threads giving step-by-step instructions. Search for instrument cluster removal or Odometer bulb replacement.

I've pulled apart my cluster before to replace the Speedo as well as the trip bulbs. Speedo and Odo are separate items removable independent of each other. You can eyeball it and figure it out. Sorry, but if you get someone else's odo and roll the numbers, they will never line up perfectly again. Be careful to keep things sqeakly clean and blow all dust out before putting it back together. Oh, when removing cluster, you will need to remove plastic ignition housing and also loosen steering column bolts to drop column for needed clearance.

Hope you got small hands.... The connecting wire harnesses when installing is a major PITA and if not connected properly, It will scare the hell out of you with many things not working...AC, Heat, Console lights, car not charging etc. You must push on the plugs until you hear them click solidly.

Right now I have a dead moth sitting inside my cluster... not sure how the hell the little bastard got in, but he did and now lays feet up next to the warning lights the past few months. When he was alive, I tried to coax him towards the trip reset stem with lights so I could yank him with a tweezer but he wasnt' game.

A bad speed sensor should cause other issues, like speedometer and power steering assist problems. Also, I think it's possible to adjust the odometer without having number alignment issues.

It would be interesting to know if your odometer failure is due to a bad motor (that turns the numbers) or if it's the actual digits.

Equally appropriate ... <in Roseanne Roseannadanna voice> "Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something! If it's not one thing, it's another!"

is there any way to roll the numbers electronically rather than mechanically?

i bought a new cluster and i would like to put to my existing mileage. but there is about 20k difference.

also anybody know how to remove the circuit board from the speedo? i've removed all screws but the board still seems to be connected to speedo.

thanks

The numbers are mechanical, so I don't think so... unless you hooked up your odometer to some sort of motor that would turn it. In either case I think mechanically is going to be easier...

The odometer is ELECTRICALLY driven by a tiny (white) motor that gets its signal from the transmission output sensor. The motors fail apparently. You can (not so easily, but quite doable) reset the number drums to the correct mileage. To remove the circuit board, you have to desolder the 4 connections that supply power to the odometer motor--they hold the things together. that's the PITA. I will do it for you for $25+shipping as a service. Note the Active car speedo-odometer board is different than a standard. It has an additional speed sensor circuit that provided input to the active suspension system computer.

I have a couple of 'spare' 90-93 instrument clusters we can trade

Keith, are those active suspension clusters?

If so, i'll take one.

my odomoter, trip gauges and speedo stopped working. i'm going to test the speed sensor today.

like with many things on these 15,14,13yr old cars the plastic clips are brittle!!! be careful. The right corner on my center console by the ac controls is a bit raised because i broke the clip in that corner. I wish i could fix it! Like the Virgin said, "be gentle".
