Still brand-new to this site but I have read that many of you installed a B&M trans cooler. I found them on the Summit Racing site (was at their facility last week). I'm assuming most of you get the smaller size; something like 5"X12". Summit offers a mounting kit but where do I get the hoses and fittings?

Should I run the trans lines straight to it or add it to the stock rad cooling?

Any advice is appreciated.

Get the 70268--it should have all the hoses/hardware you need. Opinions vary on how best to route, and might depend somewhat on climate/temperatures.

Bypass the stock heat exhancger entirely.Cleaner install plus you eliminate the possibility of heat exchanger colgs ruining your transmission.

The only reason to even consider using the built in transmission cooler in the engine rad is for cold weather applications. Some think the transmission needs all the help it can warming up.

this is a myth for two reasons.

On the 90-93 the transmission cooling section is on the coldest part of the rad (LH). In freezing weather water flowing around this part of the rad stays cool for a very long time. If you start the car and idle it for five minutes the transmission fluid will be hotter than the coolant in the rad.

transmission oil heats up fast due to the torque convertor. A known byproduct of a torque convertor is heat. A lot of wasted energy turns up as heat in the oil being pumped through the convertor. This is why the fluid flow goes pump -> convertor -> cooler -> lube -> pan. At idle, the convertor isn't generating much heat since the turbine is spinning free. Put the car in drive and the turbine suddenly stops (if the car's stopped) The convertor becomes a 1000 watt heater for the ATF. Drive the car and effect lesses some, but is still quite signifigant.

Completely bypass the original system. People ask me all the time why cars don't have OEM external transmission coolers, thanks to Palmerwnd I have an answer: "You are only one interested in seeing your car work perfectly past the end of the warranty period." This suggests a giant conspirsay, but it's not really, why should Infiniti spend extra money on a feature that will only be signifigant between 100,000 and 200,000 miles.

First of all, I appreciate you guys pitching in on this discussion. I'm sure those who have been here for a while have seen this same conversation many times.

I also have a '98 Mazda MPV. My '91 MPV went 232,000 miles and I still see it driving around town. My '94 had 122,000 when I sold it and this '98 has 140,000 and is still going strong. The key? Mazda included a factory trans cooler when they installed the factory towing package. I even removed the factory foglights so the cooler gets more airflow. I tow about four times per month (industrial cleaning equipment and my '84 BMW Spec E30 race car) so all my MPV's have had the towing pkg and the 4,500 lbs. tow rating. Non-tow package MPV's are known to have trans troubles. I just wish we had installed the cooler on this Q many years ago.

This '90 Q was bought by my grandparents in 1991 with 18k on the clock. It was traded in at the dealer by a guy who wanted a new color. The original trans was replaced under warranty at 38,000 miles. If I recall correctly, the car was barely out of warranty. I had written a letter to Infiniti praising the car and they wanted to use my comments in some print ads. The dealer initially refused to cover the trans but agreed to cover it after we told him that we were currently working with Infiniti's ad company, but that we would not lend our name to a company that didn't take better care of it's customers. After all, this was one of the best premium sedans sold in America at that time. The service manager called corporate in California and they confirmed our story and told him to cover it.

Ironically, they actually never used my letter in the 1991 print ads but did use it in the sales brochure for the 1994 (I think) Q45. The sales "package" included the booklet and a video. We have a couple of copies as souveniers. I still enjoy watching the ten-minutes-or-so video. They took about ten prospective buys to the Nissan Proving grounds and compared the Q to other similar cars.

I look foward to discussing this great car with some real experts. And yes, I'll use the search button before asking questions that have been discussed before.

Thanks,

Carter

Wow, that's a great story! I'd love to see the ad package. Sounds like you could have a really good early Q there. You definately want to hold on to that factory transmission as long as possible. Besides being expensive, the factory remans just aren't the same as the all-new units from Japan. I assume that's what you got since it was replaced early on...

Where in NC are you located? It's nice to be within a fairly comfortable drive to T3... If you're ever in the Columbia area we'll have to try to meet up.

Heath

P.S. How many lifter jobs have you had done on your MPVs? My parents looked at several used ones, but the lifter noise was always an issue. We were told it's very common.

Send me a mailing address ([email protected]) and I'll drop one of the sales packages in the mail to you. I have only a couple so I'll need it back when you're finished. I'm in Raleigh.

I don't get to Colombia very often but we sometimes have regional meetings there with our fellow ChemStation (water-based industrial cleaner manufacturing) location. If I get that way, I'll let you know.

I had Mazda do the HLA's (hydraulic lash adjusters) under warranty on my '91 MPV and I paid to have them done at about 130K. My '94 was just out of warranty when I bought it but I found out from the dealer and other indepedant sources that it really doesn't do any damage to let them tick. The ticking would come and go but never caused any problems. I told the guy who bought it (before he bought it) that he should ask the dealer service folks. They told him not to worry about it.

My '98 has a different design (it only took Mazda 9 years to come up with a fix!) and I have barely heard them just a few times. Someone who has never heard of this probably wouldn't have heard it at all.

We also have a '93 MPV used as a service vehicle at work. Non-tow package/no trans cooler. I told our company President (Dad) to have a trans cooler installed when we bought it with 30K. He didn't and the trans failed at about 75K. The new trans has a cooler now!

Overall, they are good vehicles. I've been pleased with each one that I've had.

Carter

ps. Do you really have a '90 Q with only 47K? Wow!

I have a copy of this as well - It's a cool video. Are you IN it, or just your letter?

I'm not in the video but in the front of the brochure, you'll see a reference to several letters from "race car drivers to company CEO's" or something like that. I'm the race car driver.

Under the "Performance" section of the brochure they have a quote from my letter, at the top of the page. Something about "I would rather drive the Q45 on or off the track. Carter Hunt Hunt Racing."

No big deal of course but the local dealer and I had some fun with it. :-)

And I would have loved to have been there to drive during the "hot laps" exercise in the video.

I did take this car to a road course track while instructing with Car Guys On-Track driver education. I took the car out during an instructor session and got away from another instructor driving a Mustang GT. I was driving about 7/10ths but he couldn't keep up with me. We were going down the frontstraight and I braked for turn one, a tight right hander. Basically a threashold braking exercise from 130mph to 40mph. As I accelerated out of turn one I saw a flash in my rear-view mirror. He had tried to out-brake me to catch up and went straight off the end of the front straight into the runoff area.

The only damage was to his ego and my passenger and I got a good laugh out of it.

I'll let you know how the cooler installation goes. And yes, it's good and hot (and humid) here in Nawth Car-a-lahna.

Sweet tea anyone?

This is one of the best Infiniti speeding stories, and should be posted there because it was done in a controlled environment. Good JuJu.

It's a 2-4 hour job depending on if you decide to drain/remove the radiator. Partly based on where you want the cooler to sit relative to the radiator. Email me if you need a fairly good how-to for early-gen Qs..

great thanksi just took a closer look at my records and when thy relaced the xsmn (4/98) they also replaced the radiator w/ "updates". is this a new style radiator( does it still contain the xsmn cooler) and are these "updates"designed to "fix" the short lifespan of the xsmn? i'm sure your thinking "why dont you go and look yourself "its not that i'm lazy i'm just not sure what to look for.

The updates of the early generation 1 G50 retains the single transmission heat exchanger on the left side of the radiator. it is not a cooler, and is normally by passed with the 70268.

There has been some talk of installing a valve for routing the ATF back through the original heat exchanger for severe winter use, but it has not been done to my knowledge.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

That was good mileage for a 91Q which was different from 1990 and 1992 forward.

You obviously haven't driven/owned many domestics [other than GM] with V8 [even V6] and 36k warranties.

Ask any transmission technicans where they make their money. It amazes me owners don't do research before buying a used car.

If you have a good procedure/watch out for list, I'd love to see it.

Thanks,
