Dear Infiniti master mechanic I have a dead hole in my engine. I wanted to know what could be the cause of this? Previously my car wouldn't start and I found out from my mechanic that my E.C.U was fried. Now the problem is that the car runs but on 7 cylinders with a rough idle. Should I be worried about a new engine or is it a piston that can be replaced? The engine which is a low mileage import has 35-40000 miles on it. The car was made in 02/90. 124298 when I purchased the car and know has just about 128 on the transmission.

Mr. Q: I'd first have a full compression tst performed. Mine had a significant loss of compression in the #5 cyl, which was traced back to a bad intake valve (first one anyone has ever seen on a VH45DE to my knowledge).

Yours could be as simple as a failed injector o-ring or as complex as a bad valve.

If you can swing it, an hour worth of diagnostic time on a Consult at the dealer is a worthwhile investment ($100 or so). Come back and tell us what they say.

p.s. Have the chain guides been replaced on the new engine?

The chain guides are original. Whenever I get my car out the shop I think I will take it to the dealer for diagnostic testing. I want my Q to be fixed the right way. I'm mad because my dad has a 91 with everything original in the engine with 200,000 miles plus. The only problem he has is a little knocking sound. I'm still paying for the car and have payed in parts and labor the cost it was to finance the car. But I'm passionat to get myQ up and running again.
