90 Pathfinder auto transmission 4x4 no reverse

I looked at a '90 pathfinder today, that has been sitting at a car lot for over a month. They have $1300 on the windshield. It has 80000 miles on it, and they wrote it doesn't have reverse. It is a 4x4 auto, and is in good condition . I have an '82 280zx with an auto transmission in it, and was wondering if it would be compatible with the 4x4 pathfinder? If I talked him down to $1000, would it be worth buying? Is this a common problem with these pathfinders? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
