90 Nissan Maxima Brake Lights

Hi, my brake lights stay on and sometimes they turn on and off by themselves. It doesnt matter what gear the car is in they are always on. I thought it was the brake switch but changed my mind to the neutral safety switch because the only way to turn them off was to push the button on the side of the shifter. Now that doesnt work and i have to push the shift lock to change gears. What is it that i need to fix? Thanks for any help

Without a schematic in front of me, my guess is that there's a ground connection that's loose. Has any work been done on the electrical wiring (e.g. trailer wiring harness, alarm system)? In many cases it's when the wiring gets hacked that something goes wrong, so you need to look at any aftermarket splices and connections closely.

Well no work has been done to cause this problem as it is 1 owner with on 60k miles, the alarm is aftermarket viper which was professionally installed on the car when it was purchased in 90. I do believe it is the brake switch as they used to only stay on when the car was in park but recently started staying on all the time. If i hit the brake firmly and really fast they turn off for a minute then come back on. I am going to change both the brake and neutral safety switch as I have to push the little orange shift lock button at the base of my shifter to change gears. Thanks

Check the tail light circuit boards also. I replaced the tail light circuit board in a family member's Maxima after she found they had melted when attempting to replace the bulb. They sell online for anywhere from $10-30 + shipping.
