Can a head gasket be bad and all the cylinders on that head still have compression? I had to change the right cylinder head on my sisters max because I was told it was no good. The exhaust bolts were broken in the head. Someone tryed to get them out and broke drill bits and easy outs in them. I got a used head and Put in new valve stem seals with all new gaskets. The head looked in good shape. Started the car and now the car is smoking like crazy. I saw some drops of antifreeze coming from head and the it stopped. the is blowing black, blue some white smoke. Took out the plugs and they were black as hell now. Then Did a compression check they were 190 psi. So tonight I took the head off the cylinders were soaked with oil and the exhaust ports too all 3 cyls. The new head gasket was stuck the block good and did not stick to the head at all. Could the head gasket be bad. The head was soaked with oil and antifreeze on the head side. So when I took the head off It came off like butter like the gasket did not stick to the head at all. I got the head gasket off ebay a J.S.I. Gasket seat. There so no oil in the water and water in the oil. And I followed the shop book to take it apart and put it togeter. Thanks. Mark.

Its always possible that the head gasket could have been bad to start but I would also make sure the head itself is good. It is possible for them to warp, which will definitely cause it not to seal properly. Check the head for flatness first and if that's ok go ahead and put a new head gasket in.
