In between binges of screwing me on car insurance, my insurance company seemingly found the time to harass me about my vin #, which to them is invalid... When I double-checked the car, it was the same vin # as i had given them, but it appears as invalid. I admitted that it didn't appear to be a federal vin # since it started with z32 (z3200000432), so I had it checked out at the nissan dealership -- surprise, they said the ecu even had that as the vin #.

Is it possible that the vins were actually like this in japan back then?

Japan doesn't have VIN's, they have what are referred to as Chassis Codes. What your VIN consists of is the chassis code just made into a "VIN" when the car was first registered/insured here. Are you the first owner in Canada?

it was already registered with the government, however I believe I am the first owner, it was only the shop that imported it who had it registered with a parking plate.

well then your insurance should be able to insure it fine. i dont' see what the problem is. My insurance company just took the chasis code and said that was the VIN and just created a VIN right there and then. and from then on in it's been fine
