Do you guys know if the bose speakers for the 1st (90-93) and 2nd (94-96) gen Qs are interchangeable? Can a 91Q's rear speakers feel at home in a 94Q? Just wondering before I send them off to be rebuilt.Thanks.

I would check around for someone's old BOSE speakers, rather than pay to have those rebuilt.

I replaced mine with some Sony X-Plode speakers from Crutchfield. The Sony's take a lot more power than the BOSE amps put out, so the higher frequencys are a little strong. They sould a lot better, than the original speakers, but I am comparing the sound of 2 new technology speakers, to 2 9 year old OEM speakers.

I had to adjust the tone controls, but I have a lot better sound quality. The Bose amps had to be ty-wrapped to the new speakers. I have heard that the BOSE amps don't work with standard speakers, but my research showed me that the BOSE amps were 2 ohm, and the SONY speakers could handle 2 ohms.

They have been working for 16 months, with no problems. I wish the BOSE amps had a little more power, to drive the low ends, but for $60.00, I can't complain to loudly.

Jeff-

What's wrong with the Bose rebuilts? Not worth the $75/spkr?

"The Bose amps had to be ty-wrapped to the new speakers."

Does that mean you connected your Sony speakers to the Bose amps? How did you find out the speakers could handle 2 omhs? Did the Sonys have a range written on the back? Did you find any other speakers that could handle the Bose systems?

I'll check with Crutchfield, but I didn't think we had any options.

Thanks

I don't recall, exactly where I saw the 2 to 8 ohm rating. I actually bought the speakers, for my '93 Honda Bose system, and when I bought the Q, I transferred them.

They were the cheapest X-Plode speakers Sony made, which I do not see in the latest catalog. I recall paying $59,99 for the pair. Not sure what else might work.

Since the Bose amps are attached to the magned of the BOSE speakers, they will not fit on the SONY's.

At the time, I was not aware of the repair, and thought my only recourse was new BOSE, through a dealer, or a complete new system.

The speakers don't handle 2 ohms, the speakers ARE 4 ohms. The question is can the amps handle 4 ohms. Double the resistance requires twice the voltage to create the same current to create the same sound level. That is why the sound is softer and the frequencies are shifted.

Two 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel appears to be two ohms to the amp. Consider two small (and efficient) speakers in parallel instead of one big speaker.

I know, small speakers won't make your Q thump like an old Pinto.

The sound is not as good as my wife's 200 I30t, with the factory SUB, but it is better than most OEM systems. I do get a little thump, since the SONY's freq range drops to 30 or 35 Hz (I don't recall). They sounded great, wiht the 100 watt amps in the Honda. Almost no need for a Subwoofer.

I concur, that I might be missing some power, with the cheap SONY's. and the characteristics of the polymer cone, and coax speaker is much different than the single cone paper of the BOSE.

If the economy were better, I might go the rebuild route, or just scrap the whole system, for something else.

If you can get reman BOSE speakers for $150.00, I say do it.

Everyone told me it wouldn't work, but I am a little bull headed. I am sure, some day, I'll be looking for some replacement amps.

I love BOSE, and enjoy the I30's system, every chance I get.

I look forward to the day I get a 2002 Q, or 2003 M, with the new BOSE system.

If I get the time, I'll dig up the old paperwork, to see where I got the idea that it would work. It might have been a dream.

Just remember that there's a different amp in the 90 vs. 91-93. I'm not sure if it changed again in 1994 or not. They work with a different line level output from the head unit.

Are the front and rear amps identical? If so, I find that the 95 Mazda Milennia is the most reliable so far of the junkyard front Bose amps I've pulled. They appaerntly have a protective coating on them. $20 a piece at a junk yard.

Different equalization circuits in the front vs. rear... using amps out of a different car will also get you different equalization. I guess the Mazda amps are good option if you don't want to pay for a rebuild, but it won't get you like-new sound. For the $55 ($75-$20) difference, I think I'd just send them to Bose and take the lifetime warranty (at least that's what they told me)...

94 speakers won't work on a 91. The 94 on up speakers have an extra wire and the harnesses are white and not blue. Whites have a different arrangement with an extra wire going into the mini-amps. In short, no can do.
