Rocking one headlight at the moment until I get this fixed. Luckily I have another car to drive at night but needless to say this headlight thing is very annoying. I got one from the junkyard this weekend and its in even worse shape, put it in and I got no lights at all. Anyone have one that they know works? Maybe one from a parts car? Just spent dough on my front end this weekend and id like to not have to shell out another $80-$100 for this thing.

No, sorry, my mistake. I haven't gotten used to the new glasses :frown: I misread the timeline, so I apologize.

Ive got a couple but won't be home until Thursday afternoon. Until then try taking apart the first relay that went bad and see if you can spot a melted solder joint that's repairable. Its a small black box? Post the part number also.

So my woes with this thing continue. I was able to source not 1 but 2 headlight relay units from my local junkyard/ebay. One from a 94 and one from a 96. I was soo excited, even found a mint parts car at the yard that was untouched. Anyway, neither of the relays were even recognized by the car, turned the switch and not even one headlight tried to turn on. The on dash "headlight inoperative" message didnt even trigger which is what got me thinking. My buddy and I decided to open up all the relay units to compare them, and we have strong reason to believe that the headlight relay is actually year specific. The small transistors and relays inside the unit are completely different dispite using the same wires and connections. Also the FSM diagrams have the wires in slightly different order, and the 94+ has foglights/daytime running lights which could also be the culprit. But, when I looked into new replacement units online, every store/website lists one part number for the headlight relay that is compatible for all G50 chassis. Can anyone confirm my research?

Im also wondering if there is any way that I can rewire the 94+ relay to work? Since now I have 2 of them

Here's the relays that I have but they're labeled as headlamp sensors. One is grey and one is black. I've parted out 3 Q45's- 92,93 and 94 so I'm not sure which MY each is from. Let me know if you think one of these will work for you.

Thanks for looking into this for me. I have a question about whats pictured, can you tell me where on the car these are found? What you have here is a headlight sensor not a headlight relay. Its a part of the whole system but the sensor just communicates with the in dash display to verify the lights are working. My thinking is that the lights should still fire up even though the sensor may be bad but not sure. I want to check mine just for kicks but I dont believe its what I need. the part number for the relay is 25230-68U00

So far heres what ive experienced

original relay- passenger headlight fires sometimes/no driver/ dash displays inoperative
Both lights did randomly work the other day once. Dont know why

1995 relay- no headlights/ dash displays inoperative
1994 relay- no headlights/ dash does NOT show inoperative

On page EL151 of the 92 FSM it's shown as being under the dash on the left side of the steering wheel. Now that iIve looked in the FSM I know the part you need. I'll go look through my parts bins now to see if i have one.

ok thanks. I saw that in the FSM as well but I wanted to make sure I was reading it right. Wish I would have know that yesterday when I all the dash trim removed.lol o well

Also if you do indeed have that part, try to verify what year Q it came from if you can. I really appreciate it. I have 2 extras so I can even swap you one in exchange if you want.

Sorry but I don't have that part any more. I recall having a similar problem years ago. Have you checked the fuses under the steering wheel? Maybe the ILL (illumination) fuse? Sorry I can't offer more help.

yes, I have checked every fuse on the inside and under the hood. all check out fine. Maybe ill swap another fuse in the ILL spot just for peace of mind but when I pulled it yesterday it looked fine. Im totally baffled by this issue, especially after I saw the lights work once the other day.

Soo we can now officially close this thread while I go punch myself in the face.lol. Figured out what my issue was last night, needless to say the simplest solution solved everything. I swore I checked this out but apparently I had a bad HID ballast that was going haywire. I plugged in standard bulbs along with my original headlight relay and, BAM headlights are back. I swapped in the HID into my Z32 to double check the bad ballast and it verified bad on it as well. I guess my mixed results in the beginning were just on accident until the ballast finally crapped out for good. I read another thread where somone else experienced this but his HID ended up working again so I guess I could have paid better attention. However, with all that I have been through I have 100% VERIFIED that the headlight relays are not compatible across all years, that is a FACT. I am now the proud owner of 3 94-96 headlight relays.lol. None of which work on my car at all. If anyone needs one im gonnna post in the classifieds.
