I have a 90 and a 94 Hardbody pickup with the 4 cyl KA24E engines. On start up, the oil lite stays on too long and the engine makes wierd noises before the oil pressure comes up and it settles down. Oil pump? or something else - relief valve, dirty pickup screen, loose oil pick up, what?

Would check the oil level and do a pressure test. Other wise sounds like a slow pump.

How many miles? A lot of these motors rattle a bit at start up due to the timing chain tensioners. If they are worn they rattle until the oil gets flowing good. The light may mean it is something else. The tensioner is on the front of motor and if a buddy fires it up while you get under hood you can tell where the rattle is coming from.

Timing chain tensioner and guide problems. You have the plastic backed ones, they can cause problems. This topic has been covered in-depth alot of times and there is alot of info. Search "ka24e timing chain," or variations of that phrase.
