Why won't the later year G50 speakers fit on an earlier production car? What there some substantial change to the quality of the speakers that also justify changing the connectors. Are there adapters to make it fit for a perfect swap? If no adapters are available, can anything be done to make it fit? I'm interested in this set on ebay...

SF - I think the change in front door speaker size (4 to 6.5, IIRC)actually occured in the 92 year models. Then the addition of the A-pillar tweeters in 94.

My guess would be that's the reason the connectors don't "match up". I haven't been in side my doors, but if I understand (correctly) some posts I've read the tweeters attach "downstream" of the door speakers, so it may be that the 94-96 front door speaker connection allows for the A-pillar tweeters to be driven from the amp in the door. Might be work looking into the doors of a "retired" 94-96 at a salvage yard. In the end, you may want to get the connector and A-pillars to add the tweeters as well.

Hope this helps and good luck. Don't forget to check out the Car Audio Forum D:.

My 92 still has 4" speakers in front. And while I whine a lot about the sound quality of the 92 Q, it sounded MUCH livelier and richer compared to my mom's 2004 Acura MDX.

I love the a-pillar tweeters in the 94! Adds so much brightness and clarity that was missing, making the Bose system much more competitive with mid-range aftermarket products.

the speakers are identical in years 90-94 at least.....

the amplifiers were modified following a recall in 91....so my guess is that the connections were changed as as part of the recall.....

I once cut and spliced newer connectors/amps on to my 90.. however those amps eventuallly went before I had bose rebuild them..

On the 94... i had one amp go....but then I got 4 speakers/amps and a HU from an old member....who always came up with smoking deals.... Sopdadope.... don't know what happened to him..

anyway....I have three speakers and an amp in reserve for now...

I am not aware of the tweeters being attached to the front speakers/amps....but I am no audio tech , either....

sfbay--

I just noticed that you have a 91...that was the recall year, I believe...and bose essentially sw aps out yours for new ones....

however, I don't know if yours were ever recalled....

natsoundup - so when you spliced the connectors to your '90 to put in the '94+ front speakers, did it actually work (until the amps fried)? If it can be done, then that opens my window of searches for early and later G50 speakers on ebay as well as salvage yards. I want to stick with OEM...

Btw, the dealer recall campaign we're referring to in term of amp replacements (because of the potential danger of the amps getting hot and catching on fire) was a legitimate concern only for the rear speakers. I had that done plus, I believe, the front seat buckle replacement recall campaign.

When did they move to 6.5 in front?

I think all G50s had 4s in the front....

the splicing worked.... until the amps died

I am one of the lucky ones who also got bose to give me new speakers and amps in my old enclosures for free. And that was in the 90.. go figure
