Dispite what All Data and every manual I have read tell you, you DO NOT have to remove the engine and or transmission! Granted you will need to own a good set of 1/4 drive tools. By all means don't neglect to remove both of the rear valve cover bolts on the exaust manifold side, yes there aer 2 of them and they are only about an inch and a half apart. The rear most one is somewhat difficult to remove and they can't be seen. You have to feel your way through. The passenger side one kind of sucks the damn a/c lines are kinda in the way, but it can be done. If you dont remove them you will break the valve cover. Once you have sucessfully removed the valve covers it's pretty much down hill from there, just be through and don't be too eager to start prying on things or bad things will happen. If any of the covers don't come easily check for more bolts ther are a LOT of them. I can say this with complete confidence because I just did this on my own 1991 Q45 that I bought for $400.00.

Normally people that do the guides dont remove the valve covers but thats fine, its a decent and reasomable way of doing it plus they probably need resealed anyway. I hope you replaced just the guides, and not the chains as well.
