90-93 gears into 96 transmission
Just wondering if anyone has swapped 90-93 gears into a 94-96 Q45 transmission. How much would it reasonably cost and is there a significant chance for a screwup if I took it to a reputable transmission shop for the exchange?

Ideally I would get another one, but I currently have a brand new 1996 transmission (and a used 1990 that I could use for donor parts like the gears). Originally I was going to put in a 4.08 diff but it seems that the results have been less than satisfactory so far and I thought that the gear swap would offer similiar performance with greater reliability and cost.
the labor alone would cost at least $500 for R & R of the transmission and then add the cost of the labor putting in the new gears along with the cost of the gears would get you right up to around $1000 in total.
I noticed a differece in the 90-93 transmission in my 95 car, but the difference only exists for 1st gear...so after 50mph you obtain no benefit
While the 4.08 does not improve or hurt your 1/4 times because of the extra shift it does improve your street driveability fun factor greatly....I enjoyed my 4.08 for the week I had it in there...it was really nice to punch the car at 20mph and have the thing take off leaving others wondering what just flew by them. Yes mine whined like a ***** and sounded like a damn F16 fighter jet kicking some Al Queda a$$, but I enjoyed it very much and the rpm increase was not noticeable for me.
Search through the old threads and call Unitrax. The cost is $1,200 and they can do it in less than 1 week in and out the door for you and then it will be another $125-150 for R&R. They can do the job right as they use to build the Stillen mod. If you don't want to wait a week, you can find one on ebay or in a junkyard for less than $200, but it will take some searching that way you have your original and the modded version. Also check out Q45tech's post about putting in a 4.36 vs. 4.08 as this mod sounds more promising and better performance #'s
Here are the calculations as per Q45tech....----------------------------------------------------------------------4.36 is a GOOD ratio to match the 2.784 [1st gear] in 90-93 transmission 4.36 x 2.784= 12.1385 vs oem 9.85. It multiplies torque by 36.5%.........yielding ~~1820/10 mph or a 6500 rpm shift at 35-36 mph............2nd gear at 6500~~=64 mph BUT 3rd gear ~~= 655/10mph or 97.7 mph @6550 rpm.
The 2004 M45 and Q45 have a combined 1st gear ratio of 11.1, however 2nd gear [1.544 x 4.36=6.73] would br 5% higher.
So a 4.36 +JWT 90 Q might be 2% quicker to 30 but 2% slower from 30-63 mph. Then 2% slower to 100 mph
3rd gear 4.36 x 1.0= 4.36 .........vs 1.471 x 3.133= 4.61------------------------------------------------------------------
I can hear you all saying now...what about my 4.08 mod...it is sitting in my closet until I figure out what to do with my car as far as mods go. I am still debating on continuing with my mad mods or stopping all together. Interestingly enough....my rotten egg smell as almost gone completely away...the car has an ordor to it, but it is not a rotten egg smell or really a bad smell at all. I thought I was getting use to the smell and not smelling it anymore, but all my friends say now that my car either smells like a joint was smoked in it recently or that it just smells normal.....Ugghhh what a pain in the a$$.
BTW....I don't smoke and don't smoke any joints.....just my tires

Well if its only another $500 to swap gears, I'll probably give it a shot since that would be much more cost effective than a 4.08 differential. The bump in first gear is really all I need in that I don't want to lose any performance when I put in the new transmission. My main concern was the possibility of the transmission shop messing up a brand new transmission which from what I understand are no longer available from Nissan. Just wanted to check if anyone had done the swap before and if there were any problems.
Well if its only another $500 to swap gears, I'll probably give it a shot since that would be much more cost effective than a 4.08 differential. The bump in first gear is really all I need in that I don't want to lose any performance when I put in the new transmission.
