Hi all,
My girl ended up buying this 90 300ZX (A/T) and it has been a total nightmare. It has been to several mechanics and no one can figure out why it will not fire up. It cranks over and tries to start. Seems to want to turn over but just ends up coughing. It does start for a second when being sprayed constantly with starting fluid.
If anyone can tell me where to go from here, I will be very grateful.

Here is the list the recent things done to the car:
Wiring harness
Spark Plugs
Camshaft position sensor
Ignition control module
Fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
Majority of the fuel line
Battery + terminals
All fluids/filters changed
Exhaust and cats

Also, this car is located in Sacramento, CA. If anyone can come over and fix the problem personally, we will give them $300 cash.

Have you already replaced the PTU? Or is ignition control module what you are calling it here? The ptu is located on the passenger side timing cover. If it is not black, then it is one of the old ones and should be replaced.

The 1990 had the old style PTU which should look silver. Nissan had a recall on the old style, so before buying one make sure the recall has not been done on the car. The black one like ng was talking about is the updated version.

If you can start the car with starter fluid, that tells me either timing is off or there is no fuel to the injectors. Have you tested the injectors? Are they withing range? One way to test is pull the CAS, which should be on the driver side of the engine, turn the car on with the CAS out and slowly turn it. You should hear each injector click. Do that first before replacing anything else. That is free easy test.

My money is going on timing, very possible the belt is old and jumped timing or someone put a new one on and did it incorrectly. I would also pull the covers and see whats going on with it. Besides, wouldn't be a bad idea to change since you may have zero idea when it was changed. I would at least do a 120k kit, its not fun when a belt fails on these cars.
