My 90 240sx se has a slight power steering fluid leak. What fluid is recommended? Can't find the Dextron listed in the user manual. Do I need to replace the rack/pump or will a stop leak fluid correct the problem? Also, will a transmission flush help with an old 5-speed transmission (synchronization problem)?

Welcome to NICO!

First let's address the power steering problem. Where is the leak coming from? How bad is the leak? (how much fluid do you have to add on a weekly basis) The dextron the user manual speaks of is automatic transmission fluid.

Now, as far as the transmission goes. It's just a synchro problem and not a slipping problem correct? If it's just a small grind then try either one of the or high end oils from Royal Purple (synchromax) or Redline.... OR go to your local Chevy dealership, go in to the GM parts department, and buy some 'GM Synchromesh' ... works like a dream on harsher grinds.

Dan - Thanks for the response. My power steering leaks just a few drops every day or so. I'm a little worried now because I added about a half a cup of Pyroil (Valvoline power steering fluid) to my reservoir because it was low. Won't hurt anything, will it? Or should I try to drain some out and put Dexron ATF fluid back in? If using a stop leak product will save me the cost of the new rack and pump ($about $1400 including alignment after), then I'll surely go that route. Otherwise, since I love the car and want to keep driving it as long as possible, the maybe the repair is best. Advice?

Is the GM synchromesh for manual transmissions? Just want to be sure.

Gidday You didn't say where the leak is coming from 90% of the time powersteering leaks come from front of the pump. you can check if it a p/s leak by how often you have to topup the oil, as well as if you get surging or tightness from the steering wheel or a gurgling sound as your turning the wheel. if its the pump you can hear a high pitched whine or banging on the pulley. if that is the case no end of stop leaks will cure it as the bearing is passed its useby date and in need of replacement. you will need to replace both the bearing and the oil seal at the same time. if it is just a hose that is perished you will be able to see oil coming out from it. if your vehicle is FWD the hoses and pump are behind the engine usually left side (from front of car facing back) in the case of nissans. if car is RWD its on the left side of engine. If it's a transmission leak your on your own there,
