I was driving and I noticed steam coming from the engine bay. When I got home I popped the hood and noticed coolant steam and a spray pattern that indicated that it had come from the vicinity of the waterpump. This is weird because I just replaced the pump in the summer. Does coolant spray out of the weeping hole when the car overheats? I think the culprit could be the thermostat. Does anyone have any input? Thanks alot.

Its not supposed to. Sounds like you may have a defective water pump. You need to make sure it was not the loss of coolant that caused your over heating problem first. It is still a good idea to replace the thermostat anyway.

Bad water pump or bad gasket/seal for the water pump.

I would also recommend checking the whole cooling system - fan/hoses/radiator/radiator cap/thermostat

im gonna check all those things but what are the indications that a thermostat is bad? Skyrocketing tempertures, leak from the thermostat housing. Anything else?
