I've been trying to get my 240SX to pass smog inspections and I was told by my mechanic that the last thing I'll need to pass is a new Catalytic Converter. I was thinking of getting a High Flow Catalytic Converter but I'm not sure which one exactly, since I'm in California and I have to make sure it's CA Legal.

Long story short, two questions.

1. Anyone recommend any Catalytic Converter for a 90 Nissan 240SX (KA24E) that are California Emissions legal?

2. Is the process for changing out a Catalytic Converter fairly simple or should I get a Muffler Shop to do it? I'm at a beginning level for auto mechanics though I would like to learn for myself.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

it's too easy to reply, but here goes...

any CAT would be ok, just keep a copy of receipt and when it was installed in your glovebox... the only thing illegal is the test pipe or a hollow CAT...

process is fairly simple; just 4 bolts... however if it's the original bolts, it's probably seized up there by now... and will be a major PITA to take off

on my car, i had to use a small dremel tool & like 10 cutting discs to take them off & install w/ a bolt/washer/ lock washer/ nut

if u go for a CAT w/ a "universal fit" and no oem-style flanges, then u will haveta get a shop to weld em on

Most high flow/aftermarket cats have a wide comb [less back pressure] and less cat material thickness [plating].

They are designed to only last a short time to get an emission sticker to sell the car.

How much you spend on quality and longevity depends on when you want to buy and install another cat? Miles between inspections?
