Well, I just bought my first 240 last Monday. It was all stock with 170k on it. Never been rebuilt or anything. The only modification it had was the exhaust. The day I bought it, it drove fine for about 150 miles. Then, as soon as I got home, my brother asked to borrow it. Well, I thought I could trust him with it. But i guess not.

He cracked my transmission.

He said he was driving down the road going about 40, and some guy tried to hit him, so he slammed on the breaks. He said he heard something that sounded like an explosion and then metal dragging on the ground. The entire transmission cracked and was laying on the ground, completely destroyed.

I am no mechanic, but this really doesn't seem possible. sounds to me like he downshifted and blew it. Or tried to drift and popped the clutch and snapped it. What do you guys think?

Well, now I need a new transmission (don't worry, he's paying for it), and I have few questions.

1. How long will it take to replace a transmission with a whole new one? (my brother is a mechanic)

2. Any special parts/tools that he will need that most home mechanics won't have?

3. Would you trust a pick-n-pull transmission until i save enough to have it rebuilt?

4. Do manual transmissions need to be rebuilt? How much will it cost?

5. Any other tips or tricks to getting this thing up n running?

6. Any one in California have a s13 5sp transmission for sale? lol

Thanks

Hard to say if his story is true or not without pictures. Sounds flaky to me though. Would he offer to pay if what he said is true?

R&R trans in regular home shop should take a few hours. Only "special" tool I would sugest is a transmission jack or a transmission addaptor for a floor jack.

Just be sure to make him replace the clutch and mounts along with a full inspection and replace as required of the drive shaft and bearings. Also how much od a "hit" did the rear end take?

Manual trans do require rebuilding from time to time. The Sycro gears wear out etc. Cost depends on what requires replacement.

If he is a "regular" mechanic then he has propably done a few trans replacements and knows how to get things to line up.

Thanks so much, love to get some help.

Well, thats the reason I'm thinking the story is not so true, because there was no dent or anything in the rear, at least nothing noticeable. I'm pretty sure he's lying about it, but he's my brother, I forgive him, as long as he gets me a new transmission.

So I'm thinking we're gunna go out to pick n pull monday to get a transmission n stuff from there for the time being, just to get it moving. Then I'll save up a bit to get it rebuilt n put a better clutch.

How much would a complete transmission rebuild cost me approx.? (stock or a little better, I'm not trying to make a 10sec car or anthing)

Also, I'm new to 240's, is 170k alot? I heard they run like hondas....FOREVER.after the transmission rebuild Hopefully Ill get the motor done too. What do you guys think about that? or is it a waste of money? I like the stock ka24 (enough power, while still getting decent mileage)
