Just a quick warning. if you don't like body modifications of body kits you wont like this thread. Also I tend to ramble abit so expect it to be a lot of writing and sometimes not on subject haha.

before I can go any further I must tell how my z32 came to be. In Nov of 2012 I sold my 2004 SVT focus with the intent of buying a cheap daily driver and putting the cash towards a new home. At the time I told myself I was ready to throw in the towel on cars for awhile so I picked up prolly the most feminine car I could possibly purchase. found a 2003 mazda 626 from a coworker for the low price of 1500.

Image

now I was cool with this for prolly 5 whole mins. prolly not even that long. really sucks when you see a car that you have been pouring sweat blood and money into pulling out of your driveway with some rich fella behind the wheel cause he was buying it for his son ( was wrecked and listed on ebay about 6 months later at less then half the price I sold it) but back to the story. go into work around the end of jan 2013 and my buddy has finally desided to sell in 90 na 2+2. now ive wanted this car for a good while but he never wanted to sell it. To make matters worse he already had someone interested as well as I had no money at the time.

Soooo I threw the 626 on craigslist for a low price of 2000 dollars (which is what he was asking for his 300zx. had an interested party by 12 noon and was selling the 626 that same afternoon at 5. held the cash in my hand long enough to walk to his office for a ride to his house to get my first 300zx.

now for 2 grand I was getting a good car but then again I was getting a bit of work. here is how the car sat when I first picked it up. paint was crappy and had sat under an oak tree. washed it 3 times and it still had black stains on it. used some good old bleach and made her white as snow.

now the car came with some nice upgrades like the fact that it had some leather seats in it. the problem was a damaged drivers side seat on the bolster. good ole pick and pull charged me 16 dollars for the top half of a black leather z32 seat. put the two together(by the way had to reuse my old center piece. not super hard to take apart and put back together but not very straight forward either. pics below.

old drivers seat
Image

Image

after a bit of sweat and smarts I turned it into this.
Image

Image

you can see in the backseat why I had to choose a 2+2 instead of 2+0.

well as far as the car went it was looking good. but I had some mech issues. all in all for 2000 dollars I got a running car(not well) as well as chrome tt wheels, one piece driveshaft(auto), exhaust, intake, ecu upgrade, maxima electric fan and leather seats. my problem thou came in the from of bad connectors and injectors, the previous owner had spent big bucks(saw receipts) on having the old style injectors replace to a new set of old style injectors at a local shop. car ran like s*** like it was on 4 cylinders which is was. almost enough fuel coming out the exhaust to light a fire while running. went to the same salvage yard a picked up all new pigtails for coils, ptu, cas, iac, as well as 6 maxima injectors. some say that maxima injectors wouldn't work but ive been running um for almost a year now without any problems. kept having issues trying to get j30 injectors out in one piece. maximas on the other had come out in about 5 mins. then picked up a set of old to new style adapter from z1 and did the install. took about 6 hours to do as I took a good lunch break. extra trips to the parts store as well as goofing. also did the water line delete.

Image

Image

Image

Image

once that was installed as well as recalibrating my tps I was able to have a smooth running 300zx at prolly 25% of the cost the previous owner shelled out.

well now that I had the car running good I began my task of changing the look to my taste. ive never been a fan of keeping something oem so again turn around now before your oem eyes are burned lol.

to be continued.

well now was time to swap out the wheels. I really did like the oem tt rims with the stock body lines. but I didn't feel the 16inch look fit todays times as well as the different look of the car that I was trying to go to. on top of that I wanted that staggered look but with out the lip. kinda wanted a concave look. So I came across the xxr 527s and liked what I saw. short time later I had my own set as well as tires. as of now Im running the 18x8.75 up front and 18x9.75 rear. tires are 235 40 18 up front and 265 35 18 rear.

Image

rear wheel. ended up with rubbing due to the offset. fix this problem later on.

Image

front wheel. didn't have scrubbing on turns with bumps until lowering.

Image

I didn't have many before pics of the car with the new rims as I had planned this part of the build all at once. about a week apart the rims were installed and the new bumper, side skirts, and rear lip were installed. here is the after pics of the body kit install. pieces are from VIS. don't remember what the name is but the bumper reminded me of the greddy front.

Image

Image

you can kinda see the offset issue I had on the rear wheels in this pic.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

got tired of the huge factory antenna so desided to shave it.

Image

Image

Image

car rolled like this for a slight while as I tried to put together what I was gonna do about the rear wheel wells. I tried rolling the lips and pulling the quarters but that didn't give enough room. soooo I bought a set of flares and a welder. sorry I didn't take any pics of the surgery but I ended up reworking the quarters by taking roughly 3 inches of metal away in the area near to the top of the arch to allow suspension travel. I then reworked the wheel well to connect to the quarter panel much like the factory would. welded her up and then sealed it with rubber undercoat. then applied the flares. as of now I havnt molded the flares into the body as I still have to prep the car for paint and fix many other issues.

the purpose of spraying the car flat black was to get it all one color as I was tired of the two tone. the paint is really flat black primer I picked up from ppg. flares are universal pieces from extreme dimensions. have kinda a batmobile status now.

Image

Image

Image

Image

also picked up a wings west spoiler from a local performance shop. thing was on the top shelf with about a 1/8th of an inch of dust on it. sadly forgotten about. handed the fella a 100 dollar bill and took it home.

in these pics spoiler was just sitting on the back to see how it would look.

Image

also guess the cats out the bag as far as what I do for a living.

Image

pic of the car after I wet sanded and cleared my tail lights. they looked pretty bad as they had about 23 years of oxidation on them. this one the spoiler is installed.

Image

and this is one of the car during april of 2013 at a local car meet. the one beside is my good friends and part of the reason why I was introduced to the 300zx world.

Image

after this pic I installed a set of tein springs with kyb shocks to help out the car which had 23 year old running gear. lowered the car some as well as improved handleing.

all in all the car looks the same today as I went through the whole purchasing a new house around the end of summer. just cause I didn't get to paint it though doesn't mean nothing was done to it. when I purchased the car the biggest issue besides it being an na that I had was that it was a slush box. so I decided to fix that.

so after doing my research I decided to do the auto to 5 speed swap. to begin with I made a list of things I wanted to do while the car was down as well as a parts list. decided the engine bay was dirty and wanted new motor mounts. so an engine pull was done as well along with the trans. below is some of the parts I accumulated.

Image

f1 stage 3 clutch, steel lightened flywheel, z1 short shifter, z1 one piece 5 speed drive shaft, stainless headers, megan racing trans mount, and one piece braided clutch line. this is not all the parts just what I had in a pic.

so let the fun begin. say goodbye slush box.

Image

Image

ready to go under the knife.

Image

Image

up in the air. don't have a lift but that is on the wish list.

Image

Image

first things first the pedals and reservoir. oh yeah look. these are the pedal and reservoir I was sold online. didn't look as well as I thought they would.

Image

Image

Image

ended up spending about and hour with my mig welder adding material to the holes and then grinding it down smooth then redrilling a hole. picked up a clevis pin from ace and ta da all fixed. sorry I didn't have a pic of the finished product but it works fine.

also I cut the brake pedal and reshaped it similar to the clutch. only issue I noticed is that the pedals are at two diff heights. dunno if that is normal with this swap but it drives fine and I wasn't doing a brake pedal swap.

Image

Image

Image

unlike some people ive seen. my car didn't have a plug in the existing hole. there was nothing but metal on the firewall. the use of a 90 degree air tool as well as a cone shaped carbide bit is the best way I could fine to handle this. took maybe 10 mins and she was in. kinda did this first as I felt this was gonna be the hardest part to the swap but it seemed to go like cake.

well out with the old.

Image

damn motor mounts just about fell apart while taking it out.

Image

Image

check out that 23 year old dirty engine bay.

Image

the end all be all solution to a dirty a** problem.

Image

and the after effects of just spraying on something and pressure washing it away. this is after two sprays.

Image

that wasn't the only thing to get a bath. the trans also got a bath as it had a good but of grime on it. not spotless but better. funny thing is my buddy was driving down the road when he spotted a truck and trailer headed to the same scrapyard I picked up a lot of my parts from. he noticed a vg30 on the trailer so he flagged down the guy. guy said he pulled the engine as it was blown and never put a new one in. had the trans also pulled and was just scrapping everything. guy said the trans was fine. he ended up making more money for the trans then the scrap yard woulda paid and I got a trans for 100 dollars. cant beat that.

Image

also a bath for the engine. mocked up the headers in this picture.

Image

while she was out I decided to polish up the old turd. pulled the valve covers to redo the gaskets. while off I coated them red. also did some wrinkle black on the plenum.

Image

Image

sitting on the stand ready to go back in. in this one I have the headers mounted as well as the new f250 motor mounts installed.

Image

Image

Image

flywheel installed and torqued.

Image

6 puck disk in place.

Image

and pressure plate torqued. havnt put but 900 miles on the clutch so far but havnt had an issue yet. a know a lot of people like um and a lot don't. ive used um before without any issue. hope that I didn't jinx myself though lol

Image

going back in the bay.

Image

and a short while later she is resting in safely.

Image

Image

new z1 short throw installed with a weighted knob. it didn't take me long to realize that the metal knobs suck in the summer. sooo now I have a stock leather knob.

Image

transmission going back in.

Image

new one piece z1 shaft beside the old fabricated oem shaft. big time diff. well worth the money.

Image

as for wiring I wired in the reverse lights as well as using the auto silinode behind the driver wheel well to work as the neutral switch and wired it up. car cranked with no issue and runs great. also im still on the auto trans ecu. that's all I have as of now. next plans are to complete the body work as well as respray the car white with some black highlights. as far as performance goes im at a cross roads. ive considered a tt swap as well as vh45 and rb25. hell ive even thought of ka24det as well as sr20det. but for now shes gonna get painted.

I spy with my little eye, F150 mounts? Someone has been doing their homework!! Personally, I like those mounts better than the OEM ones.

Car looking very nice! Even with the body kit and the flares, looks good all around. Keep us updated what you decide to do with everything. My vote would be vh45 swap. I love the TT, but just something about the 4.5 V8 just makes me smile.

yes sir. the ford mounts were 30 dollars a peice and required a slight bit of mod word on the bolt holes. mounts are a bit beefer then the stock ones and with a 60 dollar a peice price tag on the z32 mounts i opted for the ford ones.
yeah im deff considering the vh45. locan pick and pull has several q45s on the lot as well as the increase in parts offered. the biggest issue before was the mounts and the oil pan for the z32. they are both offered now after a quick search on ebay lol. what would be nice thou is a set of tubular long tube headers that would fit the z32. ones that didnt require selling a testicle or kidney.

seen a few videos of 240 guys doing vortec superchargers as well as one or two with the twin screw style. seen one with twin 28s on it. now that is nasty. z bay is kinda small though. but i have cutters, a welder, and a hammer.

Looking good, I like the satin black. and I also like the engine. It looks familiar :dblthumb:

hey thanks man. yeah I didn't know how well id like the wrinkle black intake manifold but I turned out well. lot of times even if you do your valve covers they blend in with the engine as not much is exposed. but the black makes them really stand out.

not sure of what they are a clone of but VIS lists the front bumper as a Terminator bumper and the side skirts and rear as an Invader. The rear is a half bumper/lip. the kit was of a good quality thou. seemed a bit lite when I got them but they have held up well. really strong to be so lite. also the rear bumper has carbon fiber placed around the exhaust openings.

What offset for your 18x8.75's in the front??I just picked up a set with +35 and may have some troubles, just by seeing how it sits, just the rim itself on the car.

UPDATE:

so its been awhile since ive put anything up. Ive been between work, new home, and getting married so I really havnt been able to go too crazy on the car until just a few weeks ago. During the cars long break she decided to do some breaking. First off the speed sensor was having an issue and therefore I lost my speedo as well as power steering. I purchased a speed sensor thinking that was the problem but it wasn't. ended up being a 20 dollar sensor gear. During this time the battery as well as alternator went out. Oh and it started running like crap and after chasing bugs I figured out my MAF was crapped out. oh and also that lil crappy green box that works the tail lights kicked it. spent a good 500 dollars on fixing those small problems which always sucks.

PAINT TIME

But now on for the real updates. got tired of the car being ashy black primer so I went from spraying it with some battleship gray for awhile to hell lets paint it back white. and not just any white. the brightest white I could get. now by no means is this a final paint job nor is it a professional job. As with anything on this car I wanted to do it myself. far to often I see guys who hard flex in a car that they didn't break a sweat on, dirty their hands, or lose any blood building. Im not that guy. I set out to do everything on this car and if I didn't know how to do it, I would learn how to on it.

Image

aw snap. only pic I had of it while I was doing the tear down. also pre major sanding. damn near sanded my finger tips off. literally they hurt for a few days lol

Image

Image

Image

after the first coat. tis very bright.

Image

slowly coming back together

Image

Image

finally backed out on its maiden voyage.

Image

after the first wash. only thing missing is the spoiler.

Image

playing around after the wash. car turned out great. need coil overs though.

Front Brake upgrade

my NA is a 1990 model which means its comes with the rare useless aluminum brakes on the front. 26mm calipers and rotors on the front whereas other models and years came with 30mm on the front. first off I had to find some 30mm calipers for the front. lucked out and found a wrecked on at a local junkyard. was a 95 model and were in good shape just ended up being iron. oh well at least I have 30mm calipers now. sprayed um red to match the rears. got a set of oem replacement 350z brembo rotors as well as z1 adapter brackets.

Image

original baby 26mm brakes. you can barely see the rotors behind the rims.

Image

replacement brembo rotors and z1 brackets

Image

oem 26mm rotors vs 30mm brembo 12.75 rotors

Image

26mm brakes before tear down

Image

30mm 12.75 new brakes. much better.

Image

much more noticeable front brakes. not only do they look better but they feel a lot better then the old set up. plus they keep the oem brake bias. only issue so far is a slight squeal at low speed breaking ive noticed. need to tear it down and put a slight taper on the top of the pads due to the top of the pad sitting abit off of the rotor as it was designed for a smaller rotor. is a common problem with a simple fix. for a brake swap that cost 220 bucks you cant beat it.

I don't have any pics but I recently had a set of vibrant 2.5 resonators installed in the oem cat pipes on the car. the 2+2 has limited offerings on exhausts and the car already had a cxracing style catback. the exhaust was ok but had a horrible rasp as it didn't have anything for resonance besides the mufflers. by adding the resonators I was able to loose the rasp and make a much more noticeable and deep sound to the exhaust. deff worth the money and the quality is deff there.
