89 to 96 dash conversion

swaped a 96 dash into my 89 hardbody....spliced the two harnesses together got everything to work except the speedo..89 is cable 96 is electronic....have the trans from the other truck it has the speedo sending unit but my harness doesnt have anything to wire up to any ideas ?? thanks alot !!!

I'd love to see some pics from this. How long did it take you? I've thought about it, but the wiring harnesses being so different is what stopped me.

sorry, didn't even remember to answer your question. There are guys on here that have taken two individual clusters that do not interchange, and swapped the "guts" out from the speedometers, so I wonder if you could take your manual speedo guts, and transplant them into your '96 electric gauge cluster? That way, it'd look like the '96 from your perspective, but inside you've got all original 1986 technology. Just an idea. I have no idea if the logistics of that would work, but it'd be pretty dang cool if it does.

thanks for the idea... didnt think of that ...didnt take any pics though....it took me two days to figure everything out , i should have took pics wasnt thinking about that at the time.... all you need for the wiring is the harness from the cluster to the junction under the dash the 96 plug is smaller so i had to cut and splice into the 89 plug ....the colors were the same just color coded them , the 96 harness has about 10 wires that your not going to use ...i had to cut the 89 steering column bracket off and weld it to the 96 column cause i had to use the 89 brace ...the 96 didnt fit the mounting on the body...so i have the late model turn signal switch and the wiper switch...everything works except the speedo.....right on for the idea...
