Let me start this off by saying that at the end of this thread I will have a burnout video, because who doesn't love those. I have always been inspired by build threads on various forums, Nico being one of my favorites. So I felt like giving back to a place that helped me waste so much of my time :dblthumb:

For some dumb reason I talked my self into trading for a 1989 hatchback. I knew it had some problems but whatever.

Image

Little did i know what kinda of mess I was about to step into. The first real sign that should have told me to run away was the hornets that were nesting under the hood, not a real surprise since this car has been sitting for about 2 years.

Image

But it looked like it had some fun go fast parts on it so I was hooked.

So, we loaded it on the trailer and took her home

I really wish I would have took some picture of the interior before I pulled everything apart. I'm not sure how it is any where else in the US, but in Oklahoma there is a good chance that if your car sits out in a field for awhile it will become a home for a pack rat. This was kinda a bummer but hey at least he/she didn't chew up the seats!

It took awhile for weather to become nice enough to do some work on it so in the mean time I figured I could take the time and clean up some parts. I have always like how clean the engine bays on these cars can be so thats where I figured I would start. I pulled the valve cover since that was going to give me some idea of how bad the motor was off.

My picture taking skills need to improve, but you can kinda see that I'm missing the exhaust valve rocker arm. EDIT I found my rocker arm pic. I was really hoping my head wasnt going to be in this kind of shape but oh well.

It was cold and I was little irritated so I decided to put any further inspection on hold. Since the valve cover was off i figured, eh why not bling it out.

I started out polishing the letters then shoot it with some vht black wrinkle plus and let it cure in the oven. It didn't turn out all that bad.

Finally the car gods were going to give me a warm weekend to do some further inspecting. So I rolled her into the shop where I could finally shed some light on what problems I was in store for.

Image

Thank the car gods for air compressors and air tools, It made quick work on getting the motor out.

I guess I forgot to mention that I found conrod #1 hanging outside of the block, I'm not sure where this picture went to but it pretty sexy.

At this point I figured meh why not take it all apart and this is what i found.

On a side note GNR Appetite for Destruction was in the cd player, so atleast there were some sweet tunes playing when she gave up the ghost.

Here is where she sits after a long day, no motor, a trashed interior, and many cuts and bruises she gave me along the way. The engine bay needs some sweet sweet loving which I wont be able to tackle until it gets warm again. I have a "rebuilt" long block on the stand for her that's going to get took apart and inspected, that should be entertaining. Also there will be lots of general maintenance things done to make her roadworthy again so stay tuned.

Thanks! New Jersey is a long ways away from here though.

Here is a little mini update for today. So I pulled the exhaust manifold off since it looked gross. Here is the best before pic of it I have, you can kinda see it.

Here is what a little elbow grease can do

I'd say I have it about 70%, time to go back out and finish it up.

I think I can get 300hp with the mods it has already. My goal is to make it a reliable street car first and who knows from there.
