okay boys, heres a little more detail...

first of all, i really love the way the haynes book details the process... remove the starter. :wtf2: there seems to be a lot of crap in the way, i really cant figure how its gonna get out of there. but thats if you can even get at the bolts! good god, i had to get about seven different connections on the wrench just to get near em... well, i got the top one off, but i cant even budge the bottom one. kinda scared to put an impact on it, dont wanna snap it off.
but im gettin ahead of myself. in the past few weeks, shes been real hard to start. turn the key, get a few turns from the starter, then nothing. again and again might get a little half crank out of the engine. some days it takes 5-10 minutes of this til i get lucky. some days it starts on the first try. if i drive for half an hour and shut it down, it'll kick right back on. i wouldnt say that i am getting a clicking sound though. so ive been going on the notion that its the solenoid.
so i get under there, and the whole area is sprayed with oil, definitely all over the starter.
it being 4:30 in the am, im thinkin im just gonna put the top bolt back in, so i can maybe drive to the dump tomorrow... have a bed full of garbage at the moment, wanna get it out of there. i'll try to get some pics up if thats gonna help, need to track down the camera cord. like i said, im on the bubble of just taking it in, let someone else mess with that. would i really have to pull that exhaust pipe to get it out? could be a whole pile of trouble here...hope ya'll have some input
more tomorrow

I would check connections before replacing starter, sounds like bad connection on starter or ground. Starter when it goes it usually GOES. To get a tough bolt off try some good PB BLASTER penetrating oil from any parts store. Those bolts on engine get hot and seize, penetrating oil is you best friend, follow can directions.

well its funny you say that... as i was pulling away from walmart, it occurred to me that im out of pb. picked up a can after work tonight, shot it up, and thought id give it a try...busted several different sockets. need to let it soak overnight, that babys not moving. (was using 1/4" drive at the end of the extension, as this was the only size u-joint i had around...need to beef up to 3/8")
as for the connections, im still trying to get into position to test them. there seems to be plastic covers over the bolts on the solenoid, and its still really gunked up with oil. as for that, its becoming clear that the leak is a more pressing issue, as that could be causing the starter to fail before its time... its kinda hard to tell where its coming from, as ive got the front end up on jackstands, and not a lot of room to look around. it looks as if its coming from the filter, but i could be wrong...yet another can of worms...
in the am i'll go grab a new u-joint, replace the first bolt, and see if i can get a start at all, if it turns out i need to limp into a shop...not looking forward to that bill, but major engine teardown is well out of my scope. but i think we can agree that it would be foolish to put in a new starter, only to spray oil all over it and knock it out. more tomorrow

ps, i just got wise to the forum year searching issue. 1989 from here on out

okay, promising update. got the proper u-joint, got the first bolt back in, and ran it over to my regular guy. he pegged it as definitely the starter/solenoid, gonna push forward and pull and rebuild the starter. i guess i'll soon find out if you need to move anything to get it out of there. at the very least i should be able to let it hang so i can get at the contacts to put a test light on...
it was also clear to him that the oil is coming from the valve cover, and its really not as if its pouring out of there. did the oil a month ago and the level is still good.

Wha-powwww! got the starter out tonight after work. wow, it was looking grim last night man...needin a tow and what not...
thought id give it another shot, because i got a lot of movement out of it yesterday, finally got the connections off the solenoid, then solenoid off the starter, (seemed like a bad mistake at the time, when that spring popped off, but i thought it would buy me the clearance i would need.) the thing was dead anyway, so i wasnt really worried about messin it up. sadly, it was not enough...still couldnt twist it out. but then i got lucky on a pathfinder reply http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_re ... Pathfinder

this had some small details that made it happen. it turns out the heat shield is screwed onto the starter body, with three tiny philips head screws. really lame gettin them off with the starter loose, but i didnt even know they were there with all the gunk...heat shield off it pulled right out!
i did not need to drop the cross-member, as the wiki suggested. i did have to remove the oil filter and the passenger wheel. Crucial! so the starter is dropped off, waiting to be rebuilt. since im obviously not going anywhere, im drinkin becks and crown royal tonight! watching Balls of Fury...

ive got to think that putting the new one in cant be as bad as taking it out. im sure its possible, but im focused on saving a pile of money with this recent success...

again, any further input would be great. later
