:help Well I just got a '89 240 coupe. Its an automatic w/HUD. 152k miles on it. I was only able to drive the car for 3 days. Then all of a sudden the engine starts to jump around alot and die at each stop. Now if it dies it wont start back up until the next day. I noticed the spark plugs were burnt really bad and changed them. The car ran great but then started to put out alot of smoke when I would accelerate. After 20 mins of riding around it died again and I noticed the plugs were allready getting a burnt look to them. I also noticed that it had burned a half tank of fuel in just 67 miles.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

replace the o2 sensor, clean the TB, replace plugs and wires.

I will do all of this tomorrow. So this doesnt sound like a fuel pump and injector problem to you? I also noticed a bit of a spin/loose connection with one injector.

Thanks :o)

if you have the time and can do it yourself, replace the grommets on the injectors, and most importantly [forgot to put it above] check for vacuum leaks. check all vacuum hoses for cracks, splits, corrosion.

i would not call it a fuel pump problem because you are running very rich. there might be an injector failed open, but then you would be able to tell in that only one plug would be excessively fouled.

when you say the plugs looked burnt, were they covered in black soot? or did they look white?

You are a God and thanks soo far. The plugs had a black soot on them, all of them. When the car is in idle the motor shakes back and forth. The motor mounts are ok though cuz it ran smooth before it died the second time. When the car runs I do hear a vacume leake around the area between the TB and fuel rail, just cant pin point it yet.

Any idea of how much a O2 sensor cost for these? Just a ballpark figure.

most likely $60. give or take. its a good idea to change them every 90k miles, as it tells the computer if the air-fuel mix is rich or lean. if you can swing it, its a good idea to replace it because once the car is running right, it will make your gas mileage good.when the sensor is shot, the car doesnt know what the mixture is like, and just dumps a "safe" amount of fuel under normal driving, making your gas mileage bad.

also, check the connector on your airflow meter for corrosion.

start your car, and wiggle the connector and see if it makes the car run different.

the black soot means the car is running rich. its not the fuel pumps fault, and the injectors are good, because if they were all shot, the car wouldnt drive at all, let alone start.

the vacuum leak you hear is not causeing any good. i would replace the injector-manifold grommets, check all vacuum hoses, check for disconnected hoses, and check the airflow meter connection. the plugs are cheap, and the oxygen sensor isnt mandatory, but will make the car burn the proper amount of gas.

see, these kind of repairs are great for DIY, because they arent really difficult, just time consuming.

im going to say that if the grommets and finding a vacuum leak doenst work, your going to needto check the AIV, then the MAF

well, take it one step at a time, get the intake sealed up with the grommets/hoses, clean the throttle body with some fuel injection intake cleaner spray, check out the AIV, then go from there.

heres another little test. start the car, then disconnect the MAF. if nothing happens, check the connectors for corrosion. the problem might be in the MAF, but its hard to pin down until the other little problems are taken care of. if the grommets and the vacuum hoses dont fix the problem, dont get discouraged, those things would have to be addressed anyway, and its better to take the time and get to know your car and be able to take care of ti yourself than pay a mechanic to fix it. we have plenty of people who know their stuff here, and we can take care of most problems. im a mechanic, NISTECH deals exclusively with nissans, and there are many others who really know their stuff.

i would reccomend getting a service manual, and get a multi-meter, because if its not an air leak issue, you have to start checking sensors.
