89 pulsar NX swap?

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Hi,

I don't know much about Pulsars or FWD Nissans for that matter. I'm trying to help a friend out, he just bought a 89 Pulsar NX and the engine died. What would be a good engine to swap in? Nothing too expensive, trying to keep things low. I understand that you can swap in an SR20DET from the bluebird, but that is way over my friends budget. I also heard you can swap in the CA18DET into the pulsar. CA18 swap sounds good to me, which CA do I have to find to make it work without too much work? obviously the S13 CA is RWD and the Pulsar is FWD, I'm just trying to find a good engine that would bolt in and run.

What engine is stock? It may be a variant of the CA to begin with, in which case a FWD CA18DET would be a great choice.

YOu can swap in a CA18DET, shouldn't be that much of a problem. They are fairly cheap to compared to the SR. Nice little high revving motor to add, 8-9K rev limit.

I think my friend actually has a GA16, from what I can tell it's only SOHC, could also be a SOHC CA18. I've been trying to find a FWD CA18DET but I'm really having trouble finding one. The one that comes from the U12 Bluebird. Does anyone know where I can find the U12 CA18DET?

The u12 is a SR, same motor I have in my sentra. I would try soko motors, they might have some. Check a couple of our sponsors as well. They might have some insight on where to pick one up.

That's the problem with CA's. You can find them for cheaper but it's getting harder and harder to find parts for em. Even for just simple maintenance stuff. Personally I would spend the little extra cash to get the SR swap so I have the comfort of knowing there will always be parts easy to find.

This is totally not true. The CA was in the U.S. before the SR or the GA. The CA16DE came in the 1987 nissan pulsar and the CA18DE came in the 1988-89 pulsars. You can go to any auto parts store and ask for any part you need from a 1988 nissan pulsar with 1.8 DOHC motor. The water pump comes from a 1984 nissan 200sx with 1.8 litre turbocharged engine (CA18ET).

ok guys so my friend picked up a CA18DE couldn't find turbo, but whatever, he's on a budget anyways. Problem is...doesn't have a transmission, wiring harness is cut, and no ECU. Would the GA transmission work? We probably have to go find the wiring harness and ECU....? Anything you guys can suggest? thanks for the help, sorry I'm a noob to CA's GA's FWD Nissans!
