i recently dropped in a new ka24e and dont know what year the donor car was, is there any way by looking at the block or head to tell what year, id like to know the compression, so i can start to plan a turbo set-up once i get my oil problems fixed.

89 and 90 are the exact same engine, so I don't see why you would need to be able to tell then difference.

the 89 does have 8.6:1 where as the 90 KA24E has 9.0:1. The 90 model should reed around 180 psi on a compression gauge if its lower that 150 its the 89 KA.

That's not necessarily true. The KA24E was changed in a Nissan service bulletin to improve driveability. Check out this article, you do however need the serial number from your engine for comparison. http://wac.addr.com/auto/240sx/240sx.html
